Ubuntu Studio 16.04 - patched WINE, suggestions, etc?

What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

Ubuntu Studio 16.04 - patched WINE, suggestions, etc?

Post by Vitne »

Hey everyone,

I just installed Ubuntu Studio 16.04 and everything seems to be working properly. I have yet to try my RME Babyface though.

What I'm wondering is this: Can I install the patched WINE that KXStudio apparently comes with? Or do the ubuntu repos have this now? Apparently the KXStudio WINE is patched with compatibility for running audio plugins, REAPER, etc. so that's why I am wondering.

What about KXStudio repos?

Also, anything else I should install that is not in stock Ubuntu Studio 16.04?

Once I mess around a bit, I'm planning on installing DrumGizmo, Guitarix, and Zita-AT1. I'm not sure whether or not I should mess with WINE so much, or just install a virtualbox of Windows for Reaper, Waves Tune and Nectar 2. I want to do as much as possible in linux though, so I'm first gonna mess around with Zita AT1 for vocals.

I've used Linux before (years ago) so I'd still consider myself a newbie. So any explanations, I'd appreciate in laymen's terms :D

Thanks!

I can't say from experience, but I expect you can add the KXstudio repos to Ubuntu since the KXStudio distro is based on Ubuntu. I used KXStudio repos with Debian stable for a few years and mostly it worked fine, though now and then some temporary dependency issue prevented me from installing something.

My stock advice for anyone trying out Linux though is to keep it simple and avoid WINE. Install a few of the more popular programs, get used to the workflow. See what's available natively before jumping back to the stuff you used on Windows.

Otherwise you're going to spend a lot of time wrestling with bugs and trying to make non-native software work, Linux will just be an exercise in frustration.

Thanks for the reply.

Yeah, I want to avoid as much headache as possible, and ultimately I want to just do everything within linux. Pretty much the only reason I would use a Windows program would be for vocal tuning. If I absolutely must, I will probably just use a virtualmachine of Windows.

I may mess with WINE a bit for fun with some old games though. I'd love to play SimCopter again :D Good Ol' Windows 95 games
