What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

A bass player? :D Seriously, there are quite a few around, even on this board, and bass is something most people can record, straight into the interface if necessary.

sure, but i am only doing demos for now. and i do compose and arangements during the recording. i want to be able to reproduce here on my keys a phat analouge electric bass like james brown style or like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCARsmx-CFk

I used to be a bass player myself (about to take double-bass lessons again) and I can tell you, James Brown and keyboard bass just don't go together
But I understand your point.
BTW, I know a brilliant bass player in Rio, we recorded a Brasilian big band a few years ago.

yea, cords and brass instruments are not really emulatable. but as for making demos, what i need is the timbre
