ubuntu + kxstudio repos = VST errors [updated]

I installed the KXStudio repos in Ubuntu 14.04 and loaded wine-rt.
In LMMS there's an unspecified error that doesn't let me load VSTs.
Not sure where to go from here, any suggestions?
The terminal output when I open LMMS and try to load a VST plugin:
Code: Select all
theking@lappy-1:~$ lmms
Notice: could not set realtime priority.
wine: virtual memory exhausted
remote plugin died! invalidating now.

wine-rt requires the user to be in the audio group and have realtime privileges
I
think this is done by installing "kxstudio-default-settings"
check if you are in the audio group
Code: Select all
$ id
UID=1000(rob) GID=1000(rob) groepen=1000(rob),4(adm),24(cdrom),27(sudo),29(audio),30(dip),33(www-data),46(plugdev),105(fuse),108(lpadmin),110(sambashare)
check if you if the file /etc/security/limits.d/audio.conf exists
Code: Select all
$cat /etc/security/limits.d/audio.conf
# Provided by the jackd package.
#
# Changes to this file will be preserved.
#
@audio - rtprio 95
@audio - memlock unlimited
#@audio - nice -19

Thanks!!
I wasn't in the audio group. Took care of that and now can load VSTs but they are sometimes erratic and crash. These VSTs all work well on my other PC with KXStudio 14.04 installed. Here's the output on loading a couple VSTs:
Code: Select all
theking@lappy-1:~$ lmms
unique ID: adon
RemotePlugin::DebugMessage: inputs: 0 output: 2
RemotePlugin::DebugMessage: creating editor
RemotePlugin::DebugMessage: editor successfully created
RemotePlugin::DebugMessage: failed getting shared memory
unique ID: balt
RemotePlugin::DebugMessage: inputs: 0 output: 2
RemotePlugin::DebugMessage: creating editor
RemotePlugin::DebugMessage: editor successfully created
RemotePlugin::DebugMessage: failed getting shared memory

You'll really want to use reaper, for windows vsts, instead of lmms.
If on 64 bit, you may need to use reaper's 'portable install' option.
I did. Regular reaper install on 32 bit setup is usually fine. I would suggest
using 32 bit, for max vst stability, A couple months ago, 32 bit vsts
in 64 bit wine/reaper began working OK, not sure why.
I'm using a 4.2 low latency kernel in Mint17 for that. Depends on your free time,
and psyche, and maybe 'the boss', how much testing you're willing to do.
Cheers

One called "adonis" from a free VST site, the other one is called "BALLTEARER", I found it on an Industrial musicians page. Can't remember from where. Both of these load and work fine on my KXStudio station, just having issues on the laptop with stock Ubuntu.

Being the starving (not metaphorical) musician wannabe I am I just can't afford it. I'll keep it in mind, though. It's a good looking project and definitely cheaper than BitWig.

I think the reaper demo is 60 days unrestricted, and they won't hunt you down
like a dog, if it takes a bit longer to save for the $60 license. A donut a day...
In the meantime, qtractor and other linux vst hosts will load great native linux vsts,
zynaddsubfx is world-class, U-he have free and excellent synths, TyrellN6, Podolski, and Zebralette (installed as part
of the Zebra2 demo.) Then, there are TAL Noisemaker, Dexed, Obxd, Oxevst, Amsynth, Rave Generator, Helm,
MDA dx10, and jx10, Vex, Drumsynth, Tunefish, and Nekobi.
These can be used with the great Calf Effects collection, that even adds an lv2 monosynth, organ, and wavetable synth,
Not to mention a dozen or more fine commercial linux-vst synths.
all very capable. Dive right in!

Reaper keeps working after 60 days, fully functional. There's only a nag screen with a timer.

There's also airwave wine vst bridge. Works great in Qtractor, though not in Ardour.
In Ardour I use Carla to load Windows vst plugin.
