Any RPM Challenge people out there? Here's mine.

Post by ufug »

I've tried doing the RPM Challenge (writing and recording an album during February) for the last couple years but this is the first time I didn't give up due to technical issues getting my system set up. It was a good challenge.

Tout la Fete https://toutlafete.bandcamp.com/releases (the title is a mondegreen from an old Cars song).

I tried doing something different style-wise on every song, hope there's something on there you might like. I thought I'd share here because even though I'm mostly a lurker I've gotten A LOT of help from this great forum. :D

Great work man!

If I wasn't working a 9-5 job, I'd be participating in the RPM Challenge myself!

Really enjoyed these. Nice range of styles and well produced. I played right through them all, and that is something I very seldom do! :D

this is really well done. I'm impressed. If you don't mind my asking how much of this was done "in the box?" I'm impressed with the drumming with brushes in Joan so I'm guessing its an actual drum recording?

Thanks for the kind words folks! :D

@JSantos, I'm 9-5 too, 12 hour days with the commute. It was a challenge to block out time and keep the energy going in the evenings--not sure I could do it again (but I'm going to try). I failed that last couple times I tried before I even really got going.

@ssj71, I used non-free drum loops (Loop Loft) for this. I've used Hydrogen a few times in the past but writing drum parts kill me on time. Everything else was done in Mixbus, with Calf plugins, Lush Life (THANK YOU, I sent you some "encouragement" to you last week) and some synths. I just have an SM57 for everything else--the guitars are 50/50 amp vs. Guitarix (my primary instruments IRL are bass and steel guitar) The sad thing is I haven't yet figured out how to do punch ins, so every instrument is a full take with some minor editing to clean up clams.

Looking forward to making more now...

My wife and I both thought it sounded great. The stand out tracks for me were 'Stacey's a Peach', 'Fly' and 'Conspiracy'. It's especially impressive that it was recorded in such a short space of time. Well done!
