Greetings!

Currently I'm running KXStudio based on Kubuntu 12.04. I know I can't upgrade to newer versions unless I start from scratch.

With the new repo-based installation of KXStudio, if I install Kubuntu 14.04 (or newer) now, will I be able to upgrade to a newer LTS once it arrives (16.04 right?) without having to start from a fresh install?

This would work. But IMHO it's better to do a clean install of 16.04.
It's just around the corner, for me at least, 'cause I'm old and time just flies by.
