No sound after kernel panic [Solved]

Hello all, ( - and hello AGAIN to some of you)

I've had a lot of audio problems, and now I'm back with more..

First, I have Mint MATE and KX Studio on a 32-bit PC with a 2.80 GHz CPU.

After my problems got solved everything worked fine, but a few days ago I had a kernel panic / crash. (the system had been unstable some time before the crash). The long message on the black screen was very cryptic (and unfortunately I didn't thought about taking a picture of the screen) and it just stayed there, so I had to shut off the power. But it mentioned "lowlatency" so I guess it has to do with my installation of the lowlatency kernel some weeks ago. Also, it said "kthread_create_on_node" somewhere, and other kernel related things.

After this I couldn't boot from the harddisk (the screen got no signal), only from a live DVD. But turning off the power with the DVD inside and restarting, I finally got to the GRUB menu. Here I chose the lowlatency recovery version. I don't know if that fixed the kernel problem or not. There has been no crash, and the PC seems to work normally, but I still can't boot from the harddisk without the DVD, and there's no sound now. When I try to start Jack from Cadence I get the message "Failed to start JACK, please check the logs for more information." Here are some screenshots:

And here some of the sound preferences:

My soundcard is M-Audio 2496, and I have Mudita24 installed but can't open it. Nothing happens when I click on it at Menu > Applications > Mudita24.

Try typing
mudita24
in a terminal window. The screenshots you have posted seem to indicate that your Maudio is not found by the system.
In this case, the terminal will print
"No ICE1712 cards found".
Type also this informative command:
lspci | grep -i audio
You will see a description corresponding to the onboard card. Is there another line corresponding to the Maudio?

This has happened to me in the past. The PC and PCI slot could be in need of a good cleaning...

EDIT: As for the problems with booting and kernel panic, sometimes hard disks fail. Is it very old?

You're right about mudita24, here's the outputs:

tl@tl-P5Q-SE ~ $ mudita24
No ICE1712 cards found
tl@tl-P5Q-SE ~ $ lspci | grep -i audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller

Maybe I should re-install mudita24 ?

Sorry, what does "another line corresponding to the Maudio" mean? And with cleaning you mean physically, like dust?

I got the hard disk 2nd hand, so I don't know its exact age, but my guess is 5-6 years. It's a Seagate 320 GB, 7200 rpm.

No

As I expected, your m-audio is not detected, not only by mudita24, the hardware itself is not detected.
This is not a software problem. Very probably, the card is not properly connected to the PCI slot.
Try removing it, clean the board connections and insert it again.

Yes

OK, it is not very old but it could be damaged. Search the internet for "hard disk diagnosis Linux". There are utilities to check the health of a hard disk.

Cheers! Pablo

Pling, that solved it! And it even solved the boot problem too :D The soundcard was not tightly connected. In the meantime I had run a hard disk diagnosis, which found no bad blocks.

Thanks a lot! :D
