Live DVD - system locks up after boot.

Post by LowlIghtImages »

I'm attempting to try KXStudio for the first time. I have a slightly old Pentium D dual core with 2 GB RAM which I thought might be sufficient to run it but attempting to boot the live DVD (32 or 54 bit) of 14.04.2 gives the following result: Linux seems to boot OK but eventually, when the GUI starts up, a blue-patterned background appears with a KXStudio window in the middle of it. At this point, the mouse pointer is still operational but nothing else is; there is no response to the keyboard, not even to change from the GUI to a Term window. Left to it's own for a while, the screen eventually displays random patterns in the top 1/4 and garbage in the rest, indicative of frame buffer corruption.

I'm aware that the above is very light on information but if anyone has any suggestion on (a) whether that hardware will support KXStudio and, if so (b) what further information might help to diagnose what's going on, that'd be great :)

Looks like it must be the hardware in some way - it behaves in a similar way with vanilla Kubuntu 14.04, so clearly not a KXStudio problem.
I'm guessing it's more likely to be a compatibility problem than faulty hardware - there is currently a Win XP installation on the HD which works OK but running hardware tests first seems like a good idea anyway. Given how far it gets before failing, I'd bet on the video card, so that will come out in the morning & we'll see what happens with the MoBo adapter.
