Hi
I recently seriously got into Linux and one of the things I'm really enjoying is the sense of community, it's nice to be part of this one too!
I spent most of my life in Scotland, but am now living in Sunny Oakland, California, just over the bay from Frisco.
I'm a Sun Microsystems guy (sadly one way or another not for much longer though) - so have an in built love of open source, because of my job. I've also been messing around in music since the early '80's.
I'm slowly, slowly trying to learn how to make music in linux, having learned my lesson in both Cubase for Windows and Garageband in Mac, that you can get put off trying to do too much too soon.
The more recent material I recorded (mainly in Garageband, but some way back in Cubase and some are a mix of both) is at a website http://www.andrewcrescent.com. I'm secretly embarrassed by some of this music, but I suppose you can't bee too objective about any of your own stuff.
The music / web project I'm proudest of is the tribute site I run to the music scene of my youth in a little town just over the water from Edinburgh called Kirkcaldy. I was a bass player in a band that played a small part in the scene, but the site is really a tribute to all the other bands, a fond remembrance of the most fun days of my life and an attempt to find, preserve and make available very rare recordings of the bands, before they get lost forever. The website is at http://www.kirkcaldybands.com. The current UK prime minister, Gordon Brown, is from Kirkcaldy, but he didn't play in any of these bands though, so is not featured on the website.
The story of my recent conversion from Mac to Ubuntu is on my blog at http://www.zanak.blogspot.com
I've just downloaded most of the apps for Ubuntu Studio, but wanted to run it on top of a fairly vanilla Ubuntu 9.04 install as I read that Ubuntu Studio didn't work well on Macs, and the best machine I have to run Ubuntu on is a Macbook pro. So my initial project is to try to find out how to load the low latency kernel I need to run recording apps on Ubuntu on the Mac.
Bye for now and nice to be here.

Hey Andrew,
Welcome to our humble cavern of musical penguins! I think its great that you perserve the musical history of the Kirkcaldy scene with that website. Lots of recordings and images that will be non-existent elsewhere soon enough.
Have you considered making it part of the Internet Archive, which co-incidentially is started out of San Fran. I haven't ever made a contribution, just think its a overwhelmingly brave effort at something I think is important.
