I am a bit stuck on copyright laws and the clauses on fair use:
I have written out the music for the piano part of Muse's "Ruled by Secrecy" and would love to share it, since it seems to be 100% accurate... (or at leastt 99% accurate)
Now, my problem is that I don't know if I can share this publicly. If YouTube is full of people playing this song on their pianos (which was one of my major sources for checking my accuracy) then is it illegal to share this? I am not sharing the mp3, but just physically the piano part of it, so that others can play it too if they want. I am not sharing or copying the sheet music that can be bought online...
Any ideas?

Re: Copyright Laws?
It's all a terrible grey-area mess - see for example http://news.cnet.com/2100-1023-212236.html and http://www.mpaonline.org.uk/Publication ... e_Q_A.html
Sharing your transcription is not *more* illegal than publishing a performance on youtube - but both are in the grey area.etienne wrote:If YouTube is full of people playing this song on their pianos (which was one of my major sources for checking my accuracy) then is it illegal to share this?
http://wikifonia.org has a deal with a Dutch copyright institution ('musicopy') - i'm not entirely clear on the details, but as I understand it this makes it legal to publish lead sheets (for personal/educational use) there: http://wikifonia.org/node/556Any ideas?

I think you can publish parts of it, maybe for educational purposes.etienne wrote:I am a bit stuck on copyright laws and the clauses on fair use:

I suggest to put it in the rehearsal room and don't allow it to distribute. Then it's for educational purposes, and for a small group... Dunno if it's written with Lilypond, but that's also an educational purpose.
Another tip, give the piece an 'nickname' (Mjoes) so people on Google don't find it. It helps you to prevent screwing up the market... (I think they are afraid for that)...
The Spiderman does also illegal things, but is it bad, or immoral? I don't think so....
