Midi from external sources
I'm new to music production on linux from pc and I've been trying to setup my stuff for the past few days, but theres one thing that has come to dissapoint me. Probably I just don't know how to work it out. I'm very much used to sampling(audio) and in pc I used shortcircuit and lmms. Coming to linux I managed to install festige ;shortcircuit was alright and I'm using ardour as my DAW. Now,the problem is that I cant record midi in ardour which seems to give me a hard time because quantization could come in handy in such cases. Is there a way that I can record sampled auido as midi,be it in ardour or any other DAW. LMMS(in linux) seems to have problems with festige

Re: Midi from external sources
Welcome to the forums!
I'm not an ardour user, but others can help using it's midi.
As to the alternative you ask about, it is a musicians holy grail of sorts,
so do two google searches
"pitch to midi"
"audio to midi"
You'll need time, and plenty of strong coffee and snacks. There are a variety
of hardware and software solutions to study, but as far as I know,
the affordable or free, but still usable results for realtime conversion
(typically, guitar or voice to midi) will be in mono, and at ballad tempos.
(I have not studied the non-realtime software/rendering solutions)
Once you get your stack of $100 bills out, the options might get better.
But I don't recall anything making headlines yet.
Some of the better software solutions won't be available in the linux repos,
and probably won't work in wine, for many moons, if ever.
'Jam Origin' is probably the best mono guitar-to-midi option that will
work in a wineasio enabled linux system. It's a commercial product,
but the price is not terrible. It has a polyphonic mode, but that will
require a $$$ midi-guitar controller to be viable.
Cheers

Glowrak thanks. I'll dig some info, at least I have a starting point...Sysrqer, I am not exactly sure what you mean but in catia I can see "midi-through" and "midi capture"(channels or whatever they are called) and I have no hardware(i.e a midi controller) instead I use jack keyboard...Yes I can see Jack keyboard in catia
Re: Midi from external sources
I did my searches on audio/pitch to MIDI got some results but installing whatever I got became a problem and I gave up on that(temporarily) . However I got another idea which might seem tedious but I know it would suit me probably better. What if I make a sfz/sf2/ gig file of whatever I have sampled and load it it linux sampler? I tried that and it works sort of. Why "sort of" is because I still don't know how to make the sfz,/f2/ gig file. For my case I've been trying out gig file but I'm having problems with creating what I exactly want. I plan to search for forums where creating such files is explained.
Re: Midi from external sources
Upload the samples somewhere I can download them, and I'll make the sfz for you.Kibzyzii wrote:II still don't know how to make the sfz gig file.

j_e_f_f_g..... Thanks but I since my last post I've been working on that and last night I managed to make a gig file, plus I would prefer knowing it myself since I'll be using different samples tomorrow and the days after
Re: Midi from external sources
If they're samples you made yourself, consider releasing them anyway. Other folks may find them useful. I never would have been able to create a free orchestra if other people hadn't released what they created.

No I did not make them myself,I just chopped up some song and made a gig file out of the song parts
