Linux Mint, Pianoteq Stage, and VLC Media player

Hello,
Although I would like to do lots with music and Linux, I don't have a lot of time. I have downloaded and installed KX Studio a couple of times, but haven't really known where to start, so I've decided to keep things as simple as possible for the moment, and then when I get time, have another go at KX Studio.
Basically what I want to do is play a track through VLC, and at the same time play along using my midi keyboard/Pianoteq, all output coming through my soundcard/speakers. At the moment either Pianoteq or VLC grabs the soundcard, and the other won't work.
The Pianoteq readme talks about using JACK as a sound server, but I'm not really clear what JACK does but get the impression it will allow me to do what I want. Am I on the right lines?
Thanks.
