Performed a distro upgrade for Ubuntu w/kxstudio repos and jack seemed to be broken. Tried removing everything and reinstalling but have run into some issues.

Code: Select all

jason@jason-SVP132190S:~$ sudo apt-get install qjackctl
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
qjackctl : Depends: jackd but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
jason@jason-SVP132190S:~$ sudo apt-get install jackd

Is there a way to fix this while keeping all my Ardour sessions from the last couple years?

Thanks

Code: Select all

jason@jason-SVP132190S:~$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID:	Ubuntu
Description:	Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS
Release:	14.04
Codename:	trusty
Looks like I'm still on 14.04

Looks like it's already installed as the latest version. I think I must have some conflicting software sources?

Code: Select all

jason@jason-SVP132190S:~$ sudo apt-get install libjack-jackd2-0
[sudo] password for jason:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
libjack-jackd2-0 is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 32 not upgraded.

I'm wondering if I can just save my /home directory and reinstall kxstudio?

That should be OK, as long as you are using the default system gui,
with the same .dmrc setting. It's just two lines, but if the default is for example

[SessioDesktop]
Session=kde

and you have since switched to lxde or xfce etc,
you might have to edit the kde part of that file.

Over-writing non-system folders like Mozilla, and .config should mostly work fine,
probably best after you reinstall the apps you had before.
The bookmarks and other settings should be fine, if the versions are not too far apart.

Making a separate /home/you partition during your reinstall, would simplify things, allowing you
to opt out of re-partitioning your /home in future system changes.

You might want to change your synaptic settings to save your downloaded packages
(kept in /var/cache/apt/archives) and copy them to a backup drive. This can save you from
the occasional crucial regression, or an app whose dev has moved on.
Happens to me a few times each year, nice to simply replace a flawed updated app,
with an earlier version, using dpkg.

Cheers

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling jackd and it seemed to work.

Code: Select all

jackd2 is already the newest version.
libjack-jackd2-0 is already the newest version.
but now when I run qjackctl, I don't seem to have any configuration options.

Thankfully Ardour4 can open all my Ardour 3 sessions without needing jack so I'll probably just back them up and do a full format and reinstall since this seems like I've gotten myself into a real mess here.
