Lots of xruns with Reaper in wine-rt, unlike before

A while back I was using Reaper with wine-rt, wineasio and Ubuntu low latency kernel, and it worked well. More recently I have been getting huge numbers of xruns and it is impossible to do any recording. I don't know what has changed. This is the second time this has happened to me. Several years ago I was using vanilla wine and wineasio, likewise for a long time without problem, until performance suddenly and unexpectedly deteriorated with lots of xruns. So I switched to Windows. When an irresolvable interrupt conflict in Windows forced me to reinstall Ubuntu, the xrun problem had gone. How can I get to the bottom of this strange behaviour and get my laptop to behave reliably once again with Reaper in Ubuntu?

I remember having similar problem like 5-6 years ago. It turns out that specific Linux kernel was causing the issue (it was linux-2.6.31-rt), the kernel although very stable and usable was not wine-friendly. So my advise is to try experimenting with several different versions of Linux. After that, check the possibility if the current version of wine that you are using are having some regressions concerning Reaper. Lastly check the wineasio as well. It can be very tricky on 64bit systems.

Thanks for bringing a bit of clarity to the situation
I remember trying to use a hand-rolled kernel with Ubuntu once and getting in a mess. If I'm on the latest Ubuntu, what flexibility do I have to try different kernels? Doing a clean install of some ancient version of Ubuntu or of some derivative looks like a bit of an extreme measure.
