A few days ago, I came back to Linux after about 4 years. The last time I ran it was Ubuntu 11.04 on a laptop I used for IRC, browsing, VOIP and not much else. Since then I've built a gaming rig and used Windows for all that time but now I've decided it's time to come back to the penguiny side since my main usage has drifted from gaming to writing and producing music (and Windows is a lot more trouble than it's worth, IMO). I've been getting used to Ardour and LMMS for the last couple of days and so far, it's been great! I'm just trying to get comfortable with this new software and get back to, well, writing and producing.
This forum has popped up a lot when I've been Googling problems and so far it has provided a lot of very useful answers, so I figured it's time to get involved in the community.
I guess I should tell you a bit about myself and my setup. I started listening to music when I was young, and over the years made the transition from prog rock and classical music to heavy metal, and over the last couple of years I've grown a very strong interest in the more extreme subgenres of metal. I picked up the bass guitar when I was 16 after being inspired by early Metallica, and a few years later, went to college to study music. While there I made friends with lots of fellow musicians, got a hell of a lot better at playing bass, and also learned how to play guitar and drums.
I'm in a black metal band at the moment where I play drums and write most of the music. Home recording has proved to be a vital tool in my writing process. Using the production skills I was taught at college, I've recorded tons of music on my computer using a Line 6 POD with my guitar and bass, a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 interface and MIDI drums. I send these recordings to my band mates along with notation, then we get in a practice room together and play the songs. Up until now I've been using Music Creator 6 Touch, a fairly decent DAW available on Steam, to record and mix.
Now I'm running Ubuntu Studio 14.04 on my PC alongside Windows 8 (which I don't plan on booting until 10 comes out). Aside from the usual teething problems, I'm having a blast coming back to Linux, and really looking forward to producing music with FOSS. I have plans to do a solo comedy death metal side-project about my many negative experiences with Windows (I'm not bitter, honestly
Well, that's pretty much all I have to say for the moment. I'm looking forward to really getting my teeth sunk into Ardour and bringing my flavour of extreme sounds to the Linux music scene, and hopefully you guys will be able to help me with the initial learning curve whenever Google doesn't help.
Cheers!
