focusrite saffire 6 and jack routing

Post by laurent »

Just bought the saffire 6 usb 2.0.

There are several inputs: one midi, 2 analogs for microphones... and several outputs.

My problem: with Jack, launched by qjackctl, I see only one input and one output ( both under the section "alsa"). They both appear wiht the same name "20: saffire usb2" with a sublist with unique entry "0: saffire us2 midi 1"

I don't understand whether I have to change some parameters or if the card is not supported.

The output of a apay includes the following lines

Code: Select all

sysdefault:CARD=S6USB20
    Saffire 6USB2.0, USB Audio
    Default Audio Device
front:CARD=S6USB20,DEV=0
    Saffire 6USB2.0, USB Audio
    Front speakers
surround40:CARD=S6USB20,DEV=0
    Saffire 6USB2.0, USB Audio
4.0 Surround output to Front and Rear speakers
surround41:CARD=S6USB20,DEV=0
    Saffire 6USB2.0, USB Audio
4.1 Surround output to Front, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround50:CARD=S6USB20,DEV=0
    Saffire 6USB2.0, USB Audio
5.0 Surround output to Front, Center and Rear speakers
surround51:CARD=S6USB20,DEV=0
    Saffire 6USB2.0, USB Audio
5.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround71:CARD=S6USB20,DEV=0
    Saffire 6USB2.0, USB Audio
7.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Side, Rear and Woofer speakers
iec958:CARD=S6USB20,DEV=0
   Saffire 6USB2.0, USB Audio
    IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output
dmix:CARD=S6USB20,DEV=0
    Saffire 6USB2.0, USB Audio
    Direct sample mixing device
dsnoop:CARD=S6USB20,DEV=0
    Saffire 6USB2.0, USB Audio
    Direct sample snooping device
hw:CARD=S6USB20,DEV=0
    Saffire 6USB2.0, USB Audio
Direct hardware device without any conversions
plughw:CARD=S6USB20,DEV=0
    Saffire 6USB2.0, USB Audio
Hardware device with all software conversions
Thank you for your help.

What you see in the alsa tab are the MIDI ports (confusing, because there is anoter MIDI tab which referes to "jack MIDI", in contrast with "alsa MIDI").
Somehow, the focusrite is identified in the alsa midi side. Jack audio is a different thing. In the audio tab you should see some "system" capture and playbacks.
"system" is the generic, default word for whatever audio card jack is using, so if you chose the focusrite in qjackctl's setup then "system" is the focusrite.

Thank you pablo for the answer.

Yes, everythings works out of the box finally. I just misunderstood. I expected to see all the hardware inputs/outputs in jackd, and plenty were missing. Reading the doc, I realized that jackd connects _applications_ , _not hardware inputs/outputs_. Moreover jackd uses only one soundcard in a session. It was thus logical to see only few inputs/outputs in the dialog box. It took me two days to realize this

The good news is that I can confirm that the new focusrite saffire 6 in usb2.0 works well with alsa/linux. I am very happy.

Advice for the newcomer : the simplest way to avoid routing problems in jackd is to start ardour first, before jack/qjjackctl. Then ardour asks for the soundcard, you select your focusrite saffire, and ardour launches jackd with the good options.
