(Arch Linux) Sound over HDMI only works via PulseAudio

Post by GraysonPeddie »

aplay -l:

Code: Select all

card 1: Generic [HD-Audio Generic], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
Method of starting JACK: Cadence
Jack Settings: SR: 96000, Buffer Size: 512, P/B: 2

If I start JACK through HDMI, my receiver shows "STEREO" next to "SOUND" in my Marantz SR-5008 A/V Receiver. No sound, but JACK detects that there are 8 channels for playback.

If I start PulseAudio alone and disable JACK, I get "MULTI CH IN" next to "SOUND" and the "SIGNAL" shows unknown since I'm not playing any sound. I got sound through PulseAudio and the signal shows "PCM." This is while watching Youtube or when watching my recorded Super Bowl via Kodi Media Center (formerly XBMC). What does PulseAudio do to get my receiver to respond as a multi-channel output that JACK does not do?

Music Interest: New Age w/ a mix of modern smooth jazz, light techno/trance & downtempo -- something Epcot Future World/Tomorrowland-flavored.
