Hello,

Typically this sort of problem is because some other audio app is using the audio device, for example pulse audio or a standalone app which is connected to audio. I recommend http://wiki.linuxaudio.org/wiki/system_configuration and http://www.libremusicproduction.com/art ... arted-jack to learn more about jack. Unfortunately, general linux distros are often not well-optimized for professional audio work and take a fair bit of setup for good results. Audio-oriented distros like AVLinux and kxstudio are already set up and will typically work very well out-of-the-box.
