Some questions from a KXStudio newbie

Post by Veerstryngh Thynner »

Greetings all!

KXStudio has been in my system (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS) since late spring. However, the extended heat wave that summer 2014 was, where I live, did not allow more than cursory glances at it, so far. But with autumn (and more space to breathe) now upon us, I recently attempted a closer look at Carla and Claudia.

Googling those, for a better understanding of what they are (and do), brought up very little. The KXStudio manual let me down as well. So where else might I find more background information on Carla & Claudia?

My aim is to play sfz musical instrument sample, exported from external libraries, in Carla. An electric string instrument (not necessarily guitar) as MIDI controller would also be very desirable here. At my disposal as well are a Behringer "Guitar Link" audio interface (UCG102). But if this turns out to be of no real use, a Windows application (Jam Origin's MIDI guitar demo) might, potentially, be compatible.

What I can't find anything about either is as to whether musical instrument sample as integrated in Sibelius 7 (notation software) is sfz, too - or something different altogether. If the former is true, chances are that the one single wind instrument sample still needed (not available in any library but Sibelius, on my system) is also playable (on digital piano, in this instance) in Carla. I'm not sure, though, that sourcing sample from Sibelius will be feasible, in relation to Carla, so some guidance on this point would be nice, too.

Carla will load SFZ and Gigasampler files using an imbedded Linuxsampler player. It will also play SF2 files using fluildsynth. (Alternatively you can play these formats using qsampler (front end to linuxsampler) or qsynth (frontend to fluidsynth). If you can extract samples in any of SFZ, gig, or SF2 from Sibelius then you can play them on linux. Why not contact Sibilius and ask if their samples can be used with an external program?

Claudio is for session management - if you have a jack setup with several audio/midi programs and interconnections Claudio can save and restore that setup.

Thank you for clarifying that, varpa.

Because if I do, they are very likely to make very sure nobody will be able to - ever. And I don't want to be the cause of that.
