Line 6 UX8 Replacement?

Hi,

I am looking for some advice on what to replace my Line 6 UX8 with. I have used a Line 6 UX8 for home studio recording for several years. I have also used linux for many years, but up to this point had always done my recording on Windows.

Since getting the UX8 to work under linux is highly improbable and I'm willing to upgrade anyways, I'm looking for some advice on what gear I should replace it with. I need something which will work with both Ubuntu and Windows.

If you're familiar with the UX8, I am looking for a very similar setup:
-Phantom Power
-Multi-track recording (8 lines is a good start, give or take)
-XLR & 1/4in inputs

I am familiar with the hardware database ( http://wiki.linuxaudio.org/hw/start ), but I'm looking for some advice from people who own or have used the gear they are recommending. Any suggestions?

Thanks!!

Ill try to help.

Firewire options. I dont have any of these but the RME units are mostly fully linux compatable and true pro grade equal to or better than the apogee protools stuff

Presonus.. I have 3 firepod or fp10 units. they work fine single or daisy chained. 8 in 8 out but the preamps tend to be a little bit brittle and harsh but not bad.

USB I own a presonus VSL1818 about 400$ us and used around 250-350 on epay. Great unit. 8 in 8 out and has adat in out so you can add an adat 8channel mic pre . Overall i am happy with this unit and use it with an art opto8 adat. This is my mobile rig with an asus rog g750 for recording in the field.

I own the toneport ux8. by the way. never liked it.

Here is where i will probably get flamed. There is still a lot you cant do on linux as far as pro audio. I am an avid linux user. It is my job (run a small it company) and i am very passionate about using linux for everything.

Just an idea to float out to you. main desktop is an 8 core fx 8000 series 32 gig ram amd r280 graphics Arch linux machine with 5 monitors rack mounted in a cheap $80 4u case in the studio rack. Just below it is a winders 7 box same specs no monitor (i use RDP) and a motu 424 pcie card attached to a 2408 mk3 2 focusrite adat pre amps. one in the office studio the other goes 2 floors down to the basement where i turned the under the stairs area into triple walled iso room with 4 guitar cabs and 8 mics. also have 2 24io providing 48 ins and outs for outboard rack gear to be inserted into my daw.

I use the windows pc for all of the audio input and the very few vst's that i use. I use reaper on the pc. I then use netjack to buss audio back and forth via gigabit ethernet to the linux machine. Sometimes i record everything in Ardour. Sometines I record in reaper. I allways use linux for drums and sampler. With this setup i am not limited by the platform or os in front of me. Linux has its strengths so does windows. Its about making music with whatever you have available and not imposing artificial limitations.

If its in the budget and you are tech savy. Netjack can be a bitch to initially configure on windows, you could keep your ux8 and use linux. im seing about .5 to 2 ms latency with netjack depending on a few factors. Good Gigabit switch with only your daws connected and static ips help this. Even better i made a crossover cable so no switch latency at all. If you need internet on these machines install a second nic and set up routing tables.

just my 2 cents
