Hi all,
A bit about me:
21/M/USA. I have a bit of history on piano and bass guitar. Minimal theory knowledge. I live a very busy life and have one too many hobbies but I am trying to carve out time to wrap my head around what it means to create music. Right now I have a midrange laptop running Elementary OS Luna, a low end Yamaha keyboard, and a Seagull S6 acoustic I'm learning to play. I've run *nix systems since I was 14 but only in the last year have I worked to better understand what goes on under the hood. I played with an FL Studio demo on Windows years back. Right now I'm looking for something similar for my GNU/Linux box. I'm sure I'll find some good information when I get a chance to use that search bar. I look forward to getting to know you all.

...is a great linux version of modeled software pianos, affordable, and has a decent demo version.
You could use Hydrogen, a grid/pattern based sample player, to create bass and drum patterns,
to play along with. For synth/ep sounds, hexter, zynaddsubfx, whysynth, amsynth,
and the calf collection (monosynth, organ, and wavetable instruments, plus a dozen great effects)
Use qjackctl (see youtube for videos) to connect things. Nice to see someone familiar from youth,
with a real OS!
Cheers
