Hey,
I found this samples
http://www.drealm.info/sfz/DSmolken/
They seem to be good, but I tried loading them with linuxsampler, both with carla and qsampler, and it gives me a lot of distortion, kind of heavy clipping. I was actually looking for a smooth sound xD
Anyone have a clue? I'm not much into sfz. I tried both with 44.1kHz and 48kHz to no avail. The waves themselves seem to sound good, it's the mappings that are screwed.
It may be as easy as to replace some value on the files, but I'm lost. It may as well be a problem on my debian+kxstudio system, but I doubt it is.
I don't know of any similar quality bowed solo bass, so it can be a nice addition to our [the world's] free library.
Don't hesitate to slap me in the face with big fat doc pages.
Have a good one!

I d/l''ed it his bowed bass awhile back. His bowing technique and/or strings produce a lot of noise (enharmonics), which is probably what you're reacting to. I've done a bit of work on them, but they're not finished. Ultimately, this will never be a very smooth sounding bass because his bowing isn't as consistent/controlled as it needs to be for sample playback. There's a limit to how much you can fix post-production.

No, actually I wouldn't complain if it was his technique. The wavs themselves sound good through a media player, its the sfz that sounds distorted, and very heavily.
Think heavier clipping than thrash metal, haha, the pitch or timbres are irrecognizable.
I went through the sfz, but could only find the "bendup" and "benddown" op codes are incompatible with linuxsampler, but only that. And after removing them, it still sounds the same.
But if you didn't notice it, probably it's only me... I'm on kxstudio's linuxsampler. Do you know of anything I can try?
Thanks!

Just an idea: you could make a simple sfz with just one or just a few of the sample files and see if you get the same sound.
EDIT:
I just took a look. I'm not familiar with the "amp_velcurve_59=1" opcode. I thought it should be amp_velcurve=59 but its been a while. I tried to look at the official sfz spec but cakewalk moved it! (if you have info please comment on the thread I'm about to create). You might try commenting those out and see if it makes any difference.

Thanks for your answers.
Actually, it was the bit depth of the samples (32-bit float) that was causing problems with linuxsampler. I resampled the audio files to 16-bit signed integer and all is fine (plus it takes almost half the hdd space).
For anyone facing this issue (who doesn't mind losing some resolution):
Make sure you have sox installed, backup the instrument and then go into each of the sample folders (remember to do it for the noises folders too) and run:
Code: Select all
for i in $(ls | grep wav); sox $i -b 16 -e signed-integer $i-2;rm $i;mv $i-2 $i;done
For each folder of wavs.
It's a quick and dirty hack, I know. But it works.
On a side comment, the sfz are not looped, which makes this less cool than it could be.
Maybe someone can tell point me to a good tool to do this. It would make for a good addition to gmaq's page since we have no bowed doublebass there yet (and there are none available as sfz as far as I startpage'd).

I was just going to suggest that. 32-bit WAVE files use a different (float) data format than other resolutions. Lots of Linux apps read them incorrectly as linear data.
no bowed doublebass there yet
There will be eventually. I'm keeping my eye out for one. If worse comes to worse, I'll finish the one you have. But I'm not wild about the bowing (ie it'll be a nightmare to loop), so hopefully something better will come along.

You can read an sfz with looped wavs into Polyphone. Exporting as sfz adds loop information to the sfz file. Then you can convert the wavs. The loop information in the wavs isn't needed then.

Thanks for your answers again.
I'm not sure if the original wavs are looped, because the sound was so harsh I couldn't bare it for long. I'll try your solution, bluebell, and see what it gives. I didn't know polyphone handled sfz.
Bye!
