GOWAN

Post by HATEPOLICY »

Hello ppl,

Just checked online to see if there was any news regarding ASIO on linux...no joy :(
Checking commercial DAW vendors, only BITWIG and bigup to them, officially support linux.

I have been working with Cubase for 20 years, I am a full time producer,
This site is all about "free" but I would not mind paying for the same experience on Linux ;)

I always run our older machines on linux, lately, Lubuntu.
Great stuff for the web, media/servers, but counter productive for DAW's.

None the less, keep up the good fight ppl!...
Perhaps one day, Linux can and should be able to rival Apple for DAW's.

Is this what you are looking for. http://sourceforge.net/projects/wineasio/ if you want to run windows apps on Linux using wine. Linux apps don't need asio to achieve excellent low latency.

Harrison mixbus is a another Linux DAW http://harrisonconsoles.com/site/mixbus.html

I am just a home enthusiast and Linux gives me all I need, I stopped using windows years ago in the heady days when I had to disable the anti virus to get enough performance out of Cubase. :D

I realise professional needs are quite different.

I'm not sure what you mean by "counterproductive for DAWs" exactly. There are many people who actually prefer linux to Mac and Windows for audio production. Can you be more specific?

It helps to view linux itself as the daw. Learning new ways, or other peoples ways,
to accomplish quality recordings. Maximising use of yoshimi, hexter, whysynth,
hydrogen, guitarix, rakarrack, the calf monosynth/organ,
and the the calf/invada/mda plugin effects collections, and anything with a zita in the title,
means the use of mac/windows can be minimal, if at all, depending on what one is producing.

Covering the top-40 twerk tunes, will have different requirements than
composing original creations, or scoring for film. Different as hoops, golf, and football.
And having less knowledge, or a smaller budget, allows for ingenuity, and creativity
to stand in their stead. Assuming the most expensive way, to be best, such as mac/cubase,
is not easily supported when speaking of arts. Musicianship is crucial in some genres,
and irrelevant in others. An old dusty instrument one grew up with, may be more cherished
than the multi-thousand dollar workstations at big-city shops.
Cheers
