Hi there in Italy, Funny, I am about in the same music computer land as you. I too, just want to get a few loops/sequences running and play around. I have an old school round port midi synth I am trying to get up and running, no luck yet. May have to get a round port to usb adapter.
A couple of years ago, I had a little known but stripped down linux system, Wolfer Linux, and I had added a bunch of music apps, most of them I had compiled form source code and the performance was almost flawless. The distro never gained traction and faded away with no updates, repos were gone. I wiped it off for something else and regretted it! I was getting somewhere and had some jams going with HarmonySEQ, Hydrogen, Amsynth, AMS, and more.
So now am back to square one. I have both Tango Studio and AVLinux up and having troubles. Sound card and jack issues. I also just installed an interesting and very lean French distro, NuTyx, based on LFS (linux from scratch) I'll try to build up sound apps from source code with that one. I just takes a very long time getting all dependencies compiled and then the grinding of compiling the sound apps. Could be worth the effort.
Oh, I am not much for the Goth Metal scene, but, I gotta say, Cristina Scabia of Lacuna Coil is one helluva singer. I do like "Spellbound" and "Heaven's A Lie"... Those wild Italian rockers! Hahaha...
Keep at it, and rock on...

Marco, benvenuto!

In caso non lo conoscessi ancora, esiste pure un forum italiano per musicisti Linux: http://www.linux-audio.org/

Comunque se preferisci l'inglese allora qui sei nel posto giusto.

I'm also in Italy-- both in Milan (Busto Arsizio) and Calabria (near Paola). Ciao!
