I'm having a problem with Cadence. I swapped between soundcards (UMC404 to a UA25) and Cadence appears to start jack but Carla and other jack clients are unable to connect to the server. I've tried changing settings, rebooting and so on but it doesn't appear to make any difference.

QJackctl works fine.

I wonder if perhaps it could be something to do with how Cadence detects devices. I had issues before with it, getting the UMC404 to work. After fiddling it somehow started working but now after switching to the UA25 it does nothing except show it's started.

This is probably a known issue, loading VST's in Carla can be hit-and-miss? For example, sometimes Superwave P8 loads, sometimes it doesn't. Synth1 appears to load more reliably.

Apologies if this has been asked before, but having a menu on virtual instruments in Carla (Obxd for example) would be awesome in order to select presets. (Yeah yeah.... I know.... another preset merchant) :mrgreen:
For example, when loading Obxd via jalv.gtk it presents a menu with the ability to close the app or select presets from the list. Currently one has to go to the editor in Carla, then click load state and then select the patch, click OK and so forth.

It would be nice if all audio such as sound from Firefox, VLC, Java apps and other non-jack applications such as games, pipelight and virtualbox worked out of the box. I have tried both the KX-Studio ISO and Upgrading from Kubuntu and sound just doesn't work on non-JACK compatible applications.
Which is a shame as the tools that you have developed look really cool, but since I use my computer for non-creative tasks such as playing games, watching movies and studying for my networking degree I can't use your distro for all my tasks. :(
It is a trival thing to fix but I don't like the OSX like position of the window control buttons, I guess you could put a question in the setup script as to how the user would like it - not really important but it would be a nice touch. :D

My other request would be more indepth doccumentation, to help users set such things up themselves, I am more than a little confused on how to use everything. I do realise that you are quite busy developing the applications.

Another idea I have is a graphical way to configure FFADO such as some QT based wizzard. I do have a few suggestions for such a thing if you would like to hear them.

The developers generally don't have the time or resources to write much documentation and there's probably not much money in it for commercial writers (who stick to the proven money spinning markets like OSX and Windows) so (in my opinion) it's up to us end users to chip in and write up documentation, both as a learning exercise for ourselves and as a service to the community. Ask for help in the relevant sections for whatever you need help with and then return the favour by organising your notes and posting tutorials on how to do stuff so others can learn from it and the same things won't need to be explained again. (Meaning that more time can be spent on new developments and new problems).

Hopefully all these mini-tutorials can eventually be combined into a larger and more organised guide, both for KXStudio and Linux Audio in general.

Please include kio-mtp. This is required so that KDE/Dolphin users can write files to their smartphones and tablets. I find Dolphin's mtp:/ kio to be the fastest and easiest method to transfer files to/from my phone.

Problems with Ardour 3.

Am experiencing lots of crashes with Ardour3, some reproducable others of a random nature.

After importing a midi file any attempt to create an audio track/bus crashes.
Recently created sessions sometimes fail to load.

System seems generally unstable ( linuxsampler crashing aswell ).

I tried to go back to a fresh install of KXStudio 12.04 but Ardour3 exhibits exactly same problems.

Bug in Dolphin Search

Post by marcverho »

Dolphin search is not working for me, ‘‘Invalid Protocol’’, on a fresh installed + updated KXstudio KXStudio_14.04b_64bit.

Found https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=326094, which is about the same problem, but on KXstudio 12. Says:
The package that contains Dolphin should also install the file filenamesearch.protocol (on my OpenSuse system, it's in the directory /usr/share/kde4/services/).
This file was not in my /usr/share/kde4/services/, but I found it on another partion of my drive, with Kubuntu 14.10 with Plasma 2. I just copied over the file with sudo cp; went to
This file was missing on my KXStudio 14.04 install as well. I copied it over with sudo cp from another partition, which has Kubuntu 14.10 with Plasma 2. After that I disabled & enabled Desktop Search from System Settings/Desktop Search, and it worked.
filenamesearch.protocol is a textfile, mine has the following:

Code: Select all

[Protocol]
exec=kio_filenamesearch
protocol=filenamesearch
input=none
output=filesystem
reading=true
writing=false
deleting=true
linking=false
makedir=false
moving=false
