PreSounus AudioBox *Sort Of* 1818VSL Working in Linux

Post by tomsa »

Today, I got a new Presonus 1818VSL in the mail. I bought it because all of the research I did before buying said that it "worked OOTB". Here's a few examples:
http://linuxmusicians.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=7543
and
http://wiki.linuxaudio.org/wiki/hardwar ... 18vsl_usb2
So here's the deal. It appears to work with JACK/Cadence on my Ubuntu 14.04 (vanilla, but I tried the lowlatency kernel too) and with Bitwig Studio but it doesn't show up in my Ubuntu system settings menu-even though it does show in Alsamixer

I'm not sure why this is. I tried editing my alsabase.conf to have the following lines:

Code: Select all

options snd-usb-audio index=0
options snd-hda-intel index=1
also, the output of

Code: Select all

aplay -l
is

Code: Select all

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: VSL [AudioBox 1818 VSL], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC269VB Analog [ALC269VB Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
and the output of

Code: Select all

arecord -l
is

Code: Select all

**** List of CAPTURE Hardware Devices ****
card 0: VSL [AudioBox 1818 VSL], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: ALC269VB Analog [ALC269VB Analog]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
But still, It doesn't show in the Ubuntu settings menu. Is there any way to fix this behavior? Do I have to change audio cards every time I want to use something that doesn't work with JACK (i.e. netflix app, steam games, etc.)? I'd love a little bit of insight to this behavior if anyone has any ideas. Thanks!

Thanks FalkTX. As it turns out, my past failures with JACK for most things may be gone. Now that I've had some more time to work with the interface, it looks like the interface is going to provide audio for all of my other apps, games, and what have you running through JACK. I am pleasently surprised. Thanks for all you do for those of us who are purely musicians and couldn't code our way out of a wet paper bag. You're a real mensch. Here's to continuing to avaoid the cult of Mac!
