Hiyo! I'm a newbie

Post by Brill »

Hello! I'm a new peron :3 I'm actualy quite new to linux as well, and its super confusing.
Which leads me onto the reason I joined! Sorry if I should of made a seperate thread for this, but I don't know where to post it.
So I have a Presonus external soundcard (AudioBox 22VSL), and I'm trying to use it for my mic (Rode NT1-A), But the silly thing doesn't want to work at all! It works for my head phones, and putting sound out, but just not the imput of sound into anythin (Skype, random DAWs i tired). I ended up finding up it was a driver problem, or lack of them exsisting I think? Anyway... Do people have any way to help me? i'm using the latest Ubuntu, and its 32-bit.
Thanks :p

Hi,
I don't have a complete answer for you - I'm just researching what it'll take for me to get set up, but at least I can start you off.

If your presonus is like my Firebox, then the headphone output will work no matter what. The interface does not even have to have achieved sync with the host.

there's quite a lot to consider,( especially since you're using Firewire), and I'm sure the system configuration page in the linuxmusicians wiki has most of it.

Don't despair, though. I had it set up beautifully under Ubuntu 08.04, so I know it's possible.

Hi Brill,
here's the link to the configuration page: http://wiki.linuxaudio.org/wiki/system_configuration

See if this link is able to help you get set up, then let us know how it goes. Much hardware should just work as-is when plugged in, without installing drivers, since the linux kernel has most drivers already in it.

Btw, you didn't mention using Jack in your set-up. You might want to install that first, and you should see the hardware appear in the connections window. ;)

So I actually have little understanding of anything to do with linux(one of my friends said to try it because my computer OS broke, and now won't help me get another OS on and won't help me with anything to do with this), and a very short attention span. So I got through about 5 sentences of what you linked and was quite confused.
What Do I have to do? All i want to be able to do for the foreseeable future is use a Mic for skype. iS there like a quick fix or soemthing?

If you just want to use skype, then once you install it and open it, just go into the "options" (on the lower left of the screen, I think) and look for "audio" settings. Once there, make sure your mic is connected, then see what audio input options it gives you. Your mic should be listed.

I know how it feels being new to linux and feeling "lost." If you are patient and ask for help on forums like these, you will find that linux will serve you very very well. ;)

Also, depending on what operating system you are using (Ubuntu, Mint, etc), there is also a forum that is dedicated to you and your needs specifically.

What application are you trying to use, and what others are open?

I don't know, but you might want to try the built-in mic on your computer. Also, you can open a terminal and type

Code: Select all

alsamixer
and hit return. It will show you the output and input levels available on your system. Try increasing all the input levels and see if you get a signal.

Brill, your Presonus card is connected via Firewire right? I'm pretty sure you need the FFADO driver for that, instead of ALSA. Not sure if you also need JACK just to use it with Skype.

It does not use Firewire. I also downloaded the JACK thing and it did nothing at all.
