Using Qjack to route midi controller to different software

Hello all,
I am new to linux as a DAW and I need a little help with the midi in Qjack. I have an AKAI MPK mini which is just a very small midi keyboard with 8 mpc pads. The software that come with it allows me to assign the pads to a different midi channel than the keys. I want to assign the pads to play one-shot samples in a separate software while I use the keys to play synth instruments. I can't figure out how to connect the keys to one software and the pads to another. Is this done in the patchbay or in connection or in setup? I can use connections okay but I have never used the patchbay and I tend to mess everything up in setup. Can someone help me out a little please?
