Hi

Post by Orvendr »

Hi everyone,

I'm being new here and don't really know what to expect yet but i thought it would be a good idea to introduce myself a little, in the extent of what really needs to be known anyway :)

Well, i have been a linux user/admin for like ten years now (although spent much time on Windows too during that time) and i have been a musician for all my life, well for like thirty years at least... I have been a guitar player for over 20 years now and recorded a few videos on Youtube, while under Windows, using VirtualDub and Audacity.

For personal as well as economical reasons, last year, i have decided to install only Fedora 19 on my new laptop (HP g6 2333er amd64/radeon x7000), and although i know VirtualDub works for some on Wine, it just doesn't work for me, and i don't really like the idea in the first place, even having read the Wine faq.

Somehow, i have chosen instead to go as far as I could using VLC, which is great software, by all means, but the only problem i have with my audio linux setup is that i still get latency, which i don't have on Windows XP that's on my 10yo HP comp....

So eventhough i have spent countless hours trying to tweak everything in pavucontrol and researched every pulse audio related package and also installed the RT planet ccma(not sure about the spelling) which resulted simply in a failure to boot my system, i have then ended up being being dependant again on my old XP laptop, that, strangely enough, even if it takes three times longer to perform any operation, still performs audio/video operations quickly and with no latency that's nocticable to the human ear....

So basically, that's the reason of my registering here, trying to find the perfect audio/video recording setup for me on Fedora 19/ amd64

I should mention also that i cannot upgrade to F20 because support for the kmod catalyst driver has been abandoned for F20. Equally, and you will have to take my word for it : Fedora/RH products are the linuxes that work best on HP with AMD64, at least my ten year experience tells me that, so that i can't plan on installing anything else without risking a lot of frustration.

Also, very, very important, my Fedora system is the system i use for my daily job as a freelancer, so it's definitely not like it's a summer test station that i can break at any minute and solve problems by just reinstalling via dvd. Meaning, eventhough i am doing backups and everything, i still have to be real careful in terms of what to try next. I just can't allow myself too many exotic moves, if i can allow any at all.

But I was thinking maybe there's an musician-orirented distribution that i could install in dualboot and that could solve all my problems.

Reading the Fedora guide for musicians did not help, at least not in terms of solving latency problems.

Well anyway, i will read here now and then and see if i can come up with something that works reliably enough. I don't know about how original this all sounds, but i'm glad i have found this community though :)

Welcome!

For low latency you need the jack audio server and a bit of tweaking the OS. So better dual boot with a specialised distro. Kxstudio (based on ubuntu/debian, kde), Ubuntustudio (ubuntu, xfce), DreamStudio (ubuntu, Unity), AVLinux ( Debian, lxde), planet ccrma (Fedora)... Kxstudio and AVLinux maintainers are active members in LM.

Hi, sorry for the long delay. Thanks for your reply though, that really gets me where i need. I will have to wait to get new hardware so i can install either Kxstudio or AVLinux. I know i could dual boot, but i also know i'm taking too many chances doing it that way, mostly coz i have hp/amd64. I have read a bit about AVLinux and that seems the road ahead for me so that looks great. Thanks again for all that info
