Funding For Carla
Posted: Sun Dec 22, 2013 5:36 pm
Hi, I am helping set up a crowdfunding campaign for Carla. Here is the draft text so far (https://pad.fsfe.org/p/carla_1)
Carla is a Free Software Audio Plug-in Host: she allows musicians to mix-up and manage hundreds of free software applications, instruments, beats and effects, connecting them together in a visual way with colourful drag drop interface, as if they were hardware boxes connected with wires. Carla can then plug them into your speakers or music composition app like Ardour and to play/record the composition.
"Carla is part of an incredible international movement to free Creativity. By working together using Free Software, Open Standards and Creative Commons licences, artists and computer hackers are building a musical world that we can all share in, whatever our nationality, whether we be rich or poor, listener or composer, student or master. Carla is something we can all share in, even if we don't use it ourselves." - Anna Morris, Free Software Advocate
"The power of Linux audio lies in its diversity and modularity. Carla makes those features robust and convenient." Sam Tuke
MORE QUOTES, plus video.
Features to Fund
1) Carla as an LV2 plug-in
LV2 (LADSPA version 2) http://lv2plug.in/ is an Open Standard for plugins and matching host applications, mainly targeted at audio processing and generation. Open Standards allow graceful interaction and compatibility between different software. As a consequence there is more choice and control for the user. So, by funding the development of Carla as an LV2 plugin you are helping grow connectivity between different Free Software audio applications, and allowing for even greater creative freedom for Free Software musicians.
2) direct support for csound files
"Csound is one of the best known and longest established programs in the field of audio-programming.. [its] history lies deep in the roots of computer music. It is a direct descendant of the oldest computer-program for sound synthesis." (1: http://flossmanuals.net/csound/). It is a Free Software musical programming language which allows musicians to compose using computer code: it turns your computer into an exiting musical instrument.
Csound was chosen to be the audio/music development system for the OneLaptopPerChild movement and was is installed on over 2 million laptops distributed to children in developing countries around the world.
By funding the development of csound support in Carla you are helping grow connectivity between different Free Software audio applications, and allowing for even greater creative freedom for Free Software musicians.

Can anyone add to an improve on this? It needs to be clear to non-technical people who do not use Carla why they might want to fund the software anyway (after all, they may well listen to things made in it!). I would love more quotes to say why Carla is so cool
