setting up an alesis multimix 8 (USB) under Ubuntu 12.04

I host and co-host a couple of internet radio programs, and I am trying to get my Alesis Multimix USB 8 set up with Internet DJ Console, which is the Shoutcast server for Linux. My mixer is currently set up with a Shure PG48 Dynamic mic, and a 1/8' to RCA for the Record out to get the sound into the computer. This is where the problem arises:
JACK Control doesn't recognize the hardware for in/out, so I am having problems getting skype calls (yes, I have to use an outboard method of taking calls) and my own voice through IDJC.
Would an audio interface (Linux compliant) solve this problem?
Any suggestions for routing would be appreciated.
Thanks
Kelly
