USB midi - Controller not working in KXstudio

Hi all. I reinstalled the latest and greatest KXstudio 12.04LTS on my laptop. Very stable and all good. My main reason for installing it is to use it next to a Yamaha keyboard as a midi controller for all the VST's and other fun instruments. I don't particularly need to sequence anything.

After investigating, I read in another thread USB midi connections work as usual. I believe FalkTX pointed out that the latest 3.8 low-latency kernel can create problems. Let's say I simple want Wolpertinger synth to run with my external midi controller playing the sounds. Sounds I downgrade to an earlier Kernel. The USB UCA-222 behringer is producing sound and the virtual midi boards play sound as well. USB-midi interface appears in the patchbay but no matter what plug in synth it is connected to the keyboard will not trigger anything? I tried ALSA midi settings in Cadence. any ideas?

It is working now. I was using primarily the patchbay in Carla. I used Claudia with a virtual midi piano (jack) and I believe set the settings to ALSA-midi bridge. The USB midi will appear and I patched from USB midi to the midi in of whatever synth is loaded as usual. The outs go to the hardware playback. I'll include screenshots if anyone needs them. Don't know why I can't go from USB midi to the midi in of any synth.

I am getting midi lockup. At least I can test sounds. Would not use it in Live environment. Any alternative setups anyone would recommend so I don't have midi freeze of death?
