I just finished the following HOW TO
Beginner's Guide to Building LinuxSampler
(For Ubuntu Studio and other Ubuntu derivatives)
This guide targets a broader (less technical) audience than the official documentation. It takes you every step of the way from obtaining the sources via SVN, compiling the backend, and running Fantasia.

cool, but compiling from source is more work than just installing the precompiled svn binaries from the kxstudio repositories.
something like
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install -y software-properties-common wget
sudo add-apt-repository -y ppa:kxstudio-debian/kxstudio
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -y kxstudio-repos
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install -y linuxsampler qsampler
(you should read
this for more information)
I can't confirm this because I don't currently have access to an ubuntu machine but it should work.

As far as I can tell, LinuxSampler used to be in the kxstudio repositories, but isn't anymore? For the current list of applications see
http://kxstudio.sourceforge.net/Reposit ... plications
(I think this has been true for Ubuntu 13.04 and Ubuntu 13.10)

Wow! I wish the LinuxSampler forum had been this responsive.
What do I need to do after I follow the instructions on the repositories page?
http://kxstudio.sourceforge.net/Repositories
I did "sudo apt-get install linuxsampler" but when I open Fantasia it gives me an error: "Updating database directory: Cannot open instruments database: /var/lib/linuxsampler/instruments.db". Does installing "linuxsampler" give me everything I need or are there other things I need to install, and how do I find their names? (I removed all the self-built linuxsampler packages before installing the kxstudio repositories)

Your instructions for the kxstudio repos are incomplete (missing installing kxstudio-repos package, which is the most important thing!).
Please always send users to
http://kxstudio.sourceforge.net/Repositories instead.
the install instructions are a bit different from when I used them since you've been modifying the repos and such so I assumed that kxstudio-repos is a metapackage that just contained all the packages in kxstudio, so to install only linuxsampler I thought my instructions would be correct. Is that wrong? If so I can change the instructions.

The best front-end I've found for LinuxSampler is Carla,
And, it's not just an interface for LS, it's an all around plugin host with the best jack patchbay FOSS has to offer. Just make sure Carla knows where your GIG/SFZ fonts are; then you can simply add them as plugins and Carla will load LinuxSampler for them on its own. Carla will also handle sf2 fonts (FluidSynth), tons of effects, a whole passel of synthesizers and probably a bunch of other things I haven't even discovered yet. Of course, you'll need to have those things installed in your system - can't load what's not there.

Yes, that is wrong.
kxstudio-repos is the package that contains the actual repository information.
i see. Sorry for the misinformation, updating so no one else will be confused.
