All sound crapped out on me, need help

So I am running KXStudio with 3.2.0-35 Kernel (I upgraded once the kernel and couldn't use the wireless or some of the other features of my laptop (push buttons and stuff). After experimenting and setting things up, here I was recording my bands practice with about 5 ms of latency. I am using a Presonus 1818vsl with all the fun inputs filled to the brim and everything was humming along pretty well. I was pretty impressed although it was the first time for the guys so they were just learning about the slap back sound when recording. We get through about 3 or 4 songs and all of a sudden, A wave of Xruns hits me and kills Ardour 3. I try a few things, then a full reboot and I start getting messages that the 1818 is able to do playback in Kmix. From there forward, I am dead on the water. cannot get any input to show a signal. I can get the playback to play through the 1818 but without inputs its not going well.I thought it was Ardour, experimented as much as I could but nothing. I sure hope my 18181 isnt dead after a couple weeks of abuse. I seriously think it has a lot to do with the Kmix errors I was getting, but I had my wireless disabled while recording so reporting the error wasn't an option. Now, while doing my normal laptop use, Jack cannot start on the regular sound card. So things are going downhill quick.
I would really appreciate anyone who would be up for helping me troubleshoot this as I am a fairly newbie (can run terminal comands and synaptic so not a total newb). Anyone able to help?

I have been experimenting a bit, and I am pretty sure it is not the 1818 that died. Before jack stopped working, I could hear out of it. Every time I boot up, I get a message from Kmix that states it cannot get the 1818vsl could not work, even though its not configured in Jack as the sound device or currently plugged in. Jack refuses to start with the regular sound card selected no matter what settings I change. I get sound on startup and shutdown, but nothing in between. No youtube, no mp3 playing nothing. So I think it could be Kmix or Alsa that is very grumpy, but I am having a hard time figuring this one out. Anyone?

Do you have any usb devices plugged in that may be taking precednce over the default soundcard?

What is the output of:

Code: Select all

$ cat /proc/asound/cards
your default card should be listed on 0; here is mine when i have no devices plugged in showing my Creative X-Fi sound card:

Code: Select all

$ cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [CA0106         ]: CA0106 - CA0106
                      X-Fi Extreme Audio [SB0790] at 0xd000 irq 21
Here is with some USB controllers plugged in:

Code: Select all

$ cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [CA0106         ]: CA0106 - CA0106
                      X-Fi Extreme Audio [SB0790] at 0xd000 irq 21
 1 [LPK25          ]: USB-Audio - LPK25
                      AKAI professional LLC LPK25 at usb-0000:00:12.0-3, full speed
 2 [nanoKONTROL    ]: USB-Audio - nanoKONTROL
                      KORG INC. nanoKONTROL at usb-0000:00:12.0-4, full speed
I had problems where my soundcard was being loaded after the usb modules and jack refused to start. I had to add the following line to my /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf to get the default sound card to be loaded as default 0

Code: Select all

options snd_ca0106 index=0
You will have to find the module name of your soundcard, which you can probably find by

Code: Select all

$ lsmod | grep snd
Good luck.
