Newbie with AudioBox 1818VSL

I have an AudioBox 1818VSL, and I can't generate any sound through any of the ports from Ubuntu. I've installed vanilla Ubuntu 12.04, as well as upgraded to Ubuntu-studio 12.04, and I have the same result.

I know that the box is working for two reasons:
1) I can record from any of the channels using audacity.
2) The output works fine in windows where I have access to the mixer.

In the alsa mixer, the AudioBox shows up on hw:1. But playing to this device in Audacity doesn't generate any sound. I've tried using qjackctl (which I don't really understand), and under setup, all I can see is the same hw:1 and hw:1,0. After pressing start on the qjackctl control panel, I've tried selecting the JACK Audio Source in Audacity and ... nothing. It's exactly the same result. At best, I get a few clicks over the headphones when the device is first engaged. I've had similar experiences with other programs (e.g. ardour), but understand them very little.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what else I can try?

I am having the same issue in Jack. I was able to get it to work by going into the settings and under interface I could see the 1818 but that made everything show up in Jack as System and I don't think that is right. I saw the Midi in and out under the ALSA tab in connections but not the inputs. And I couldn't get the midi to hook to an input in Ardour to save me. Does anyone know what we are doing wrong?

(not trying to hijack the thread for my own use, but if two birds can go down with one stone :D )

ebeowulf,
did you figure out how to set it up? I have been experimenting with settings and tweaks for the last few weeks and last night was able to record 4 mics and a direct guitar with about 5 ms latency on my 1818vsl using Ardour. I even hooked a behringer Pro-8 with 8 more inputs to it, but only used 1 or 2 inputs there. Maybe I can be of some help (although I am pretty new myself and just barely understanding what got me to this point).

Hi, I have an AudioBox 1818VSL and I can say it's working perfectly, But you must know a couple of things that aren't so obvious:
  • the output ports for the headphones are 7 and 8, you must connect your signal to them in qjackctl, patchage, Ardour or whatever tools you use to manage audio connections
  • I had to unmute all the inputs (I used alsamixer) the first time I used it. I don't remember the name for the switches but they weren't something self-explaining (but there aren't a lot of software controls so you can't really do it wrong)
I hope this helps you.
