Running out of hope now. I just tried using an ExpressCard USB 3.0 card in the hopes that it wouldn't use the ThinkPad's port controllers, exactly the same problem. Fine for playback, not for recording.

I just upgraded to openSUSE 12.3 with the newest stable kernel, 3.10.9. Still no luck with JACK. I guess the only thing I can wait for now is the funds to build a desktop PC; motherboards don't tend to tie USB ports to a sort of built-in hub. But until then, I'm sticking with the Mac.
