Lovin' me some KDE

I haven't used KDE since '06 and now that I finally got a multi-core machine I thought I'd give the KxStudio "full" version a try.

The biggest discovery for me is tabbed applications. Being that I'm a Non devotee, running 6 or more apps at a time is the norm and being able to tab them together makes my workflow much smoother and faster. Switching applications is like switching tabs in a browser. The window rules can be set so the apps I use for music production automatically tab to each other as they start up. That's really slick!

For anyone who runs KDE and hasn't tried this you need to use the Oxygen theme to enable tabbed applications. For the apps you want to tab to each other right click on the title bar and select "More Actions" > "Special Application Settings...". A dialog box will open and in the "Arrangement and Access" tab check "Autogroup by ID" then select "Force" and in the text box next to this enter characters to set an ID. I use "non" but anything will do as long as you use the same ID for every app you want to tab in that group.

And that's it! After you've set the ID for the applications you want to tab as a group, when you open those applications together they will automatically tab to each other. :D

Interesting. I'll have to try this feature out. IIRC fluxbox also supports similar tabbed windows. I use StumpWM myself, but whatever WM/DE one uses I think that such window placement functionality is a must for doing any kind of multi-task work, especially music production. It might be helpful to people if you made a short video showing how such a configuration is used. I think far too many people suffer from constantly manually moving/searching for windows than needs be.

I got to digging around and found this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison ... w_managers fluxbox does support tabbed windows as do a few other WMs. Compiz actually supports it so pretty much anyone can have it, I guess.

As to making a video, it just seems like too simple of a thing. It's like browser tabs; any window is a mouse click away from any other window.

Before I ran into this KDE trick I thought of asking you what WM you use. I had considered tiling WMs but I couldn't imagine how that would benefit. Plus, I used Xmonad for a few months a couple of years ago and it was a little too technical for me.
