PreSonus Firestudio Mobile - any experience?

Post by canhoto »

Hello.

I'm about to buy a new card to replace my M-Audio Firewire solo which has just one XLR mic in. I thought about using a second mic with a XLR-TRS adapter, but I'm affraid it wouldn't work.

So, let's go for a new one. Hesitating between USB and Firewire (because of the USB 1.1 and 2.0 stuff with Linux).
I'm becoming more interested in the Firewire option, and I find the PreSonus Firestudio mobile a good and inexpensive option. However, neither the FFADO device list device list nor the Current Gear wiki seem very conclusive.

Does anyone have any experience with this card?

Thanks
Professional classical saxophone player from Portugal. Using Linux (mostly Kubuntu) since late 2011. Linux has replaced the "holy" Mac OS in my life.

As far USB devices go, if your device is class compliant you should be good to go. Not that there's that many stellar options in USB. I picked up an M-Audio mobile pre on craigslist a few years ago and it suits most of my dabbling needs. And aside from a shoddy usb cable, when I first got it, it works out of the box. Two xlr/trs combo plugs on it for inputs. Headphone monitoring and knobs. The mobile pre even has a 3.5mm input if you want to capture from an old tape machine or headphone out on whatever device. Just be sure the steer clear of your cell phone when using that input.

I'd probably avoid firewire devices at this point. I really haven't seen any new-ish computers with firewire for a long time now. And it was kind of rare when my current (old) computers were new-ish. But I don't have any apple products either.
