weird: USB changes alsa settings for internal boost

I just discovered that when I plug in my external USB audio interface, it causes the mic boost level for the INTERNAL computer's mic input to change!
To be more specific, the external is Alesis iO4, which has only physical external level controls. The internal boost for the laptop is set to mid-level, so whatever it was before, it goes to mid-level when the Alesis is plugged in. I can then change it still, but hey…
I also found that just plugging and unplugging the Alesis could create tons of glitches on the internal sound until I unplugged and re-plugged the internal mic input.
strange. Oh well.
