I think the best view is that simplicity is a virtue, but it is
a virtue. If there's two choices, one is simpler, and no other real difference, obviously go with simple. To make simple the absolute highest priority is misguided, in my opinion, and I doubt you actually do that. In fact, the KXStudio ISO is simpler than a different install plus PPAs, although there may be other reasons besides simplicity to go that way.

Another thing i would like to see fixed for the 12.04.2 release is the ability to playback HTML5 videos using ALSA->JACK (Plugin). In the current state it's required to be in ALSA->LOOP->JACK mode to hear anything. Adobe Flash videos doesn't have this issue, for GNash/Lightspark i really don't know, i haven't tested it yet, but i'm hoping they'll have a proper support too...

I've not noticed this issue yet. Whats sites do you use that use HTML5 audio tags that have this prob?

If you have issues with the alsa loop bridge, I'd like to hear to them though.
This is the supported alsa bridge right now, so I'm interested to get it to work perfectly. Not much for other options though...
I thought they're both KXStudio trademarks, sorry

From Cadence switch to ALSA->JACK (plugin), than disable Adobe Flash from Firefox/Add-ons/Plugins restart the browser and playback any Youtube video. After a second, it will automatically redirect you to HTML5

You never replied to my list of suggested tweaks or additions to .2 - whaddya tink?
Before you even get a breath, I've got another couple of suggestions.
grub customizer would be a very useful addition for newbs who want to dual/multi boot
How about improving the installer so that it would automatically optimize your config you have installed onto an SSD as per this guide:
http://www.howtogeek.com/62761/how-to-t ... rformance/
I realise that is only possible if we have a surefire way of detecting if a drive is an SSD or not, and I'm not sure if we do.

This weekend is LAC 2013, and although I'm not there in person I've been following it closely.
Seeing all the great presentations is very inspiring.

The livestream doesn't start here, i guess i'll watch the pre-recorded lectures later.
You should be there so that linuxaudio world informs about your achievments. Maybe next year i guess.

Yep - I'm aware of LAC but I'm too busy with other stuff to check it out right now. I presume you wanted to go but couldn't afford it, F? The organisers should really PAY for central LA figures such as yourself to go, don't you think?
If you can't tweak the .2 installer to optimize for SSDs then we can just add a link to that guide to the KX manual installation chapter, with a new sub-section header "SSD optimization" or something.

OK, I'll prob add a link to the SSD opt. guide to the KX installation chapter then.
I've still yet to visit das Vaterland so maybe LAC '14 will be my first visit? I've yet to attend a single LAC but I'd like to think I'll be part of a band who perform at the conference when I do show up.
You said that the KX Welcome Setup should register (the 32bit) wineasio.dll but I installed .1 64bit for a friend a couple of days ago and I noted that ASIO wasn't an option under REAPER until I manually registered wineasio.dll so I don't think that part of welcome setup works currently. I'd suspect it could be because wine needs to be run once and setup ~/.wine before you can register any libs, as a guess.

Yep, wine and wineasio were installed and Welcome setup was run straight after install, using the default option. Maybe we picked the wrong option? I never understood what the options meant.

I'm using this guide for optimizing my SSD performance
https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/ssd
It's distro independent, but it really improves my KXStudio experience. The one thing that's very useful for pro-audio basic setup is the 'noatime' option.

Hi Totalchaos!
Thanks for the link. I'd not seen that easytips site before and its a useful site overall but, having read its SSD guide I still think I prefer the howtogeek guide. Easytips is the only site I have seen that recommends using fstrim at boot or in a cron job over using the discard mount option. Whilst I have not done any real testing, whoever wrote the howtogeek guide did and they have provided benchmarks too so I'm more willing to believe that source - its proof he's gone the extra mile.
Easytips also recommends stuff like disabling the browser cache. Yes, your SSD may prefer that but its no good for those who pay per MB for their data (ie 3G users etc) and unless you have a super fast broadband connection, most users will have a nicer browser experience leaving cache enabled. You can then manually clear your browser cache every week/month or so.
Overprovisioning? No comment!
PS If you want to continue this discussion, please do so in the KX manual thread as I think its better discussed there, thanks!

As was just mentioned in a related thread on here, it might be a nice, newb-friendly idea to include kuser for easy user/group admin in .2
The prob with kuser is, not only is it not installed with Ubuntu's KDE as standard when most would expect it to be, it also fails to add a link to itself under KDE's System Settings - which is where people would expect to find it so maybe we could add a link to it somewhere near system settings.

Yeah, I actually included it in my notes that I had from before we made the manual. I ended up not mentioning it here because it just seemed that although the GUI is nice, the instructions in the end were not helped. Added points about kuser made things longer and more complex. But that's partly because the instructions to install it first were extra. If it were integrated well, that would be indeed newbie-friendly, but probably not a priority.

If you don't find out what the new replacement for kuser is - I've asked a few times in #kde about this and come back empty handed - then I'd like to see kuser get included in the next release. Where did you hear its been deprecated F?
Today I had another weakness of KXStudio's defaults pointed out to me - I expect it applies to regular Ubuntu too and that is that Firefox is void of any file associations. After you've downloaded a zip or tar file under FF and then click/double click to open it from FF's downloads window it doesn't automatically open the file with Ark.
Similarly, opening a picture should run gwenview, a media file or playlist should run smplayer, PDFs get opened by okular etc etc. As it stands, the user has to know not only the name of the app they'll need to use, but they also need to browse to and select the binary to run and Browse doesn't auto. take you to /usr/bin either. Of course, only experienced users would know what programs to use and where to find them.

That's why there is a ppa for firefox-kde. The problem is that right now (as by the way most of the time) the package from that ppa is overwritten from the regular ubuntu firefox package. That's why i prefer using this ppa "ppa:alexey-ivanov/firefox-kde" instead of the default "blue shell ppa" from kxstudio 12.04.1.
Another alternative is to manually "downgrade" to the "blue shell ppa" version. Unfortunately this is not the most user intuitive option.
