Wanted to say hi, and mention how appreciative I am of this forum. I've been a lurker for a while now and only recently registered. Linux has been my exclusive desktop since '96. I'll emphasize that I'm only a "Linux user" because even though I've managed to figure out many things on my own over the years, I'm in no way considered a Linux expert. When things go wrong, I can typically muddle through it. I think it was Slackware 3.xx something I cut my teeth on.

I'm not a musician by any means, but I would like to try and start making some. I purchased a new Novation Impulse 61 for my midi keyboard. I had narrowed down my choices between the Impulse and the M-Audio Axiom 61. Without really knowing what I'm talking about, I can say I purchased the Impulse because I really liked the feel of the keyboard compared to the Axiom.

I have some not-too-old computer hardware I'm going to make a dedicated machine for this work. I plan to try KX-Studio first (thank you falkTX and others). I'm typically pretty good with searching for answers on my own. Sometimes though when I'm trying to learn a new subject, I find it more challenging to locate stuff when I'm still not up to speed with the topic specific vocabulary. The correct keywords make a huge difference when your trying to find stuff.

I find it so helpful listening to the rest of you work through your successes. I also find this forum to be very civil. You can't say that about a lot of places on the WWW. I'm a car guy, and some of the car forums out there are brutal.

Thanks again for all the work you guys and gals put into this place. I will share my work in the hopes it helps someone else someday. Someone just getting started like me.

Take care all,

David

Welcome David!

Seems you've been using Linux as long as I have as my first distro was Slackware 3.1 back in '96 which had kernel 1.2.13 back then. The big difference between us is likely that I've been tracking the Linux music software that whole time and it sounds like you're only just starting to look into it properly now. The thing is, I've only started to consider Linux audio good enough for me to use and recommend others check out in the last year or so during which the FLOSS DAWs gained MIDI automation, TAL Noisemaker and samplv1 etc arrived.

If you've not spotted it yet I've wriiten a manual for KXStudio you should have a read of - I think I need to add its link to my sig now really.
