Gulls & Crows Collaboration (music video, jam session)

Post by Smeefer »

I made a song jamming out with my QuNeo connected to Hydrogen and recorded the whole thing. Kdenlive was used to edit the video. Here's the video and news story on my website:

It was tons of fun!! I hope you all like it. Lemme know...feedback is appreciated. Thanks

Nice idea. I love crows (which is a good thing as many live in our garden) --- nice to see a musical tribute to them :)

The QuNeo looks interesting. Working with Linux? Well ...obviously yes! Any problem with that?

Thanks Dave!

@Thad - I'm glad you enjoyed it. The QuNeo is VERY interesting. It's like a multi-instrument (several different types of electronic music hardware packed into one device). It can be used as a DJ mixer in Mixxx, a drum machine in Hydrogen, a MIDI keyboard in any softsynth (although i prefer to use my Axiom49 for softsynths, the QuNeo is more transportable) and a generic MIDI controller or mixing device in Ardour or probably Qtractor as well. The QuNeo can be set to different presets. One of the presets is called "grid mode" and that allows each pad to send 4 different MIDI signals (each corner of the pad), which is 64 different MIDI signals altogether. I have not yet tried using it in "grid mode" in AV Linux yet, but only because I haven't yet made a drumkit that consists of 64 different samples! One day I will try using it in grid mode though. In qjackctl "connections," it shows up in the ALSA section and can be connected to any software in that section, and it can also be used with a2jmidid to connect to software in the MIDI section. In Hydrogen, unfortunately the faders connect to samples and they are simply treated as another pad (one single pad). I hope that someday they can be used to adjust individual sample volume levels or LADSPA plugin parameters in Hydrogen.

Thanks for that further information. I'm not a musician (well, I tried a bit, once) but, like many non-musicians get fascinated by both the gear and the software. Looking around the net, I found some reviews that were not so good, but also that this thing is so reasonably priced.

Curiously, shortly after hearing your crows and gulls, I saw a report of a guy here in India who both studies animal/bird/insect cries and noises, and also makes music from them. It seems that it is called zoomusicology. Here's the article: The Bird DJ.

The faders actually by default send a note, velocity, aftertouch, and a CC - all configurable. If you wire the CC to the control you wish to manage, you will have what you need. You can either do the mapping in the Hydrogen preferences->MIDI tab or use the shit-click on hydrogen combined with CoMA mode on the QuNeo to set them up. I just verified and all works well!

You may need to change your preset to supress the note being sent.
