Greetings from South Africa - Etienne Snyman

Post by etienne »

Hi!

My name is Etienne Snyman, a musician and student from Stellenbosch, South Africa. I am studying full-time at the University in Stellenbosch, (to pronounce it, ignore the "c") but not music! I am a Christian and I am studying at the Theological Seminary to become a Youth worker/counsellor.

However, I started playing the piano as soon as my parent said I was tall enough to reach the keys, and since then I have never looked back. I play guitar, bass, drums, and even the trumpet too, and have played in about 3 band and a Symphony orchestra.

I am really into creating original, quality music, and I really enjoy listening to the local bands in South Africa, whose music is becoming of incredibly high quality. My great passion is new songs, and I and a good female friend are right now busy writing a two-man (two-person?) show about a lounge singer and her pianist, which we will hopefully perform at a local theatre in July or August.

I am really into creating quality arrangements and sheet music, and thus use MuseScore, Rosegarden, and Lilypond on a regular basis. I am not skilled in Lilypond syntax, but I am slowly learning, I think... I would love to collaborate with anyone to create quality music, and my own website will hopefully become a way for people in S.A. to do so.

I have been able to provide a few formal occasions with ensembles, and a few groups with arrangements in the past year, and as soon as I finish studying at the end of this year, I want to market and go into music part to full-time (Youth workers are not paid much here)

Feel free to visit my website at "www [dot] micmusic [dot] co [dot] za"

Here's to good music on free software!

hey, welcome in this forum :)

I really enjoy the SA band called Hot Water. I have 2 CDs of that band thanks to my girlfriend's sister who lives full time down there with her husband (Cape Town area) and comes to visit us every year in DK. I will plan a trip next year probably, I have not been there since 2004! way too long ...

Hey Thorgal! I just visited Hot Water's website - they seem to be pretty cool! Their reviews in magazines seems to show that they're pretty good, and the diverse people on the team probably means their type of music is just down my alley. Stellenbosch is between half an hour and an hour to drive to Cape Town, depending on traffic (about 70km) and so it should be no problem watching a show sometime (except that I am not rich!)
