No option for windows after KXstudio install
Hi ,
I've been trying to find a way to get grub to show up ,kxstudio and windows, after installing kxStudio besides windows .
Has anyone else had this problem?, and if so can they show me a link to the solution that worked. I've tried several methods but my system just boots into KXStudio .
thanks

Which ones? Boot Repair has worked for me before, never had to go beyond the "recommended repair" default. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repairjamsterthecool wrote: I've tried several methods
Acer Aspire 5742, Intel Core i3 370M @ 2.40GHz, 4.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 532MHz, Intel(R) HD Graphics, Alesis iO4 audio device.

Re: No option for windows after KXstudio install
Grub Customizer is very good, and a most useful tool for keeping the Grub boot menu ordered and "User Friendly." For those who care what their systems look like for those few seconds, it is also an easy way to make the process look nice. Yes, I do
--- but it also serves a practical purpose, in that I have a grub install on both of two disks, and, using different backgrounds means I can never be confused as to which disk I am booting from! (I'm easy to confuse).
Boot Repair should be in the emergency tool box for when Grub gets really broken.
The trouble with configuring and repairing Grub is that it needs familiarity and practice, and we hope not to have to get either! Both of these tools allow us to make use of the tool author's familiarity and practice

Re: No option for windows after KXstudio install
Though guys ! Getting the KXStudio live cd installation to show up the already installed windows in grub, directly after a fresh Kxstudio install should be a priority.I have no clue why this didn't happen with the live cd install . . I'm not a total newbie, well almost.Though I felt like one trying to sort this issue out.I went from just having windows installed. To just being able to boot into kxstudio, then after following a tutorial back to just being able to boot into windows again.I finally just gave up and followed some advice on how to completely remove linux from within windows .
But I do want to test KXstudio out fully .

Another very useful tool for Linux related boot issues is SuperGrubDisk2. If I have grub booting probs, its often just a case of booting SGD, loading my most recently installed Linux then open your friendly terminal and do a quick:
Code: Select all
sudo update-grub
sudo grub-install /dev/sda
sudo reboot

Re: No option for windows after KXstudio install
I'll add the above tip to the install guide but that made me think - how cool would it be if 12.04.2 included both Boot-Repair and SGD2 as a new boot menu option? SGD2 is tiny - its only about 1MB. SGD2 works for both BIOS and UEFI users.
What are the chances Big F?

Re: No option for windows after KXstudio install
You should have a "disk utility" which will display your disk partitions. You should also have something called "gparted" which is a powerful partition management tool. You can use either to find out if you still have a Windows partition on your disk.
That would be the first step. If you have overwritten it, then no point in working on how to boot from it!

Hey,
I still have not managed to get back into windows via grub loader . I installed and ran 'Boot Repair ' .The basic option did not work.
Though generated this message
Any of you guys got time to look into the http above?
EDIT: Anyway I'm going to try the above gparted EXT4 partition option .

The boot files of [The OS now in use - Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS] are far from the start of the disk. Your BIOS may not detect them. You may want to retry after creating a /boot partition (EXT4, >200MB, start of the disk). This can be performed via tools such as gParted. Then select this partition via the [Separate /boot partition:] option of [Boot Repair].
