Which well-supported interface has many inputs?

I'm just beginning to learn about audio interfaces and recording.
I would like to take at least 8 (up to 16) channels out of my mixing board
and into my computer running Ubuntu Studio 12.04.

Is there a best choice "works out of the box" interface for this?
Looking for something well-supported that has the most friendly learning curve.
USB or firewire would be fine.
extra good if it's rack mountable.

Thanks for all help!

Ooo I'm sorry I should have mentioned I'm going into a laptop.
The Delta 1010LT looks cool, but I don't have a PCI slot for it.

Does anyone know of a USB2 or Firewire interface that will do the job?
Extra good if it's 19" rack mountable.

Research is showing the Presonus Audiobox 1818vsl may be a good choice.

Wish I knew enough about this stuff to foresee pitfalls.
Any advice is gratefully appreciated.
