Not really a true statement. Yes you may end up with some packages you don't need, but it gives you an oppurtunity to learn the Arch way of doing things, pacman, AUR, etc. It's a good starting point a linux noob. I tried building Arch 6 times before I got it right, and even then I thoroughly enjoyed Cinnarch more than what I built myself, but that's just me.

I think it is. Arch is meant to be learned inside out. If you install it with a premade ISO and after a while something goes wrong you probably have no idea what is wrong. If you installed it the Arch way you might have atleast some idea what is wrong.
