Hi,
Just noticed this thread,
@abysmal43
To clarify, certainly the best way to find what suits you is to try a few different setups, I would like to point out that AV Linux focuses on stability by very much leaving the underlying support libraries in the system alone as much as possible, I look at this aspect as being the 'chassis and wheels' of the system. However the main Audio and Video applications on the system are on the average as current as KXStudio and I take great care to custom package the applications for the most reliable new user experience possible.
An updated AV Linux 6.0.1 LiveDVD is sitting and waiting to be released as soon as Ardour 3.0 is released officially and will have all the up-to-date tools you need to create 'idiotic metal' and much more!
As I said earlier enjoy and exercise your freedom to try and experiment with all of the 'studio' distros available and see what works best for you, I just wanted to point out that with AV Linux stability IS important but it doesn't come at the expense of missing out on contemporary versions of the best applications in both the FOSS and Commercial Linux software worlds.

Re: AVLinux?
Thanks guys for the support so far. Here's what I ended up doing...
Installed AVLinux, went well except I haven't manually partitioned a hard drive in a while so that took a few trials/errors to get going. Booted up, things seemed ok except I had about 5 red and green flickering lines at the top of the monitor, my touchpad scrolling didn't work, and my WiFi wouldn't stay connected. So needless to say I didn't stick it out too long with that considering I've grown accustomed to 'buntu distros where my hardware has 'just worked' over the last few years. Went back to Mint, this time version 13. Installed my usual apps, ardour, qtractor, hydrogen, AD, wine, calf plugs. Added myself to the audio group and was able to track a 3 minute drum track into qtractor with 0 xruns and 1024 frames/2 periods @44.1 khz. Tried dropping the frames down to 256 and still no xruns, but I did get a glitch noise a minute into the drums. Figure I'll install the kxstudio repos now and use the updated versions of all my audio apps. One question, how do I get all the kxstudio apps without the KDE desktop and theme?

Re: AVLinux?
follow the upgrade guide i posted earlier:http://linuxmusicians.com/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=9666. This should work for nearly ANY desktop. I use Mint 13-Cinnamon as my base, then install a cairo-dock session. Enjoy! (This is the exact process I go through for my iso's, then I just tweak some eyecandy and hotbar apps.)
As detailed in the install guide, try out ardour3, it's really close to being the all in one solution. I sequence all my MIDI drums and synths from their. Hydrogen, amsynth, etc.

Yep, installed the kxstudio-desktop-base package, pretty much just followed your guide, installed the non-free meta package and festige. All is well now and I wished I had just done that from the start and saved myself weeks of frustration! Ardour 3 sounds like it's going to be my DAW from now on, and I was wrong about the kxstudio "C" apps, they're actually awesome. Thanks again.

Re: AVLinux?
No problem. A little testing goes a long way. Glad you've found something you're happy with! Nice to hear you gave the Cadence tools another spin and enjoy them. One that's buried, can be launched from cadence itself under tools, is Render. It's the simplest tool ever, but to me one of the most useful. You hit record and it captures whatever sound is going through your system. I use it for capturing youtube samples, video game samples, etc.(I also use it as a real time render for my final mixdowns since ardour3 doesn't include a real time render mode.) If you ever need any more help, you know where we are at! If you ever need mixing, or engineering tips, hit me up.
