Which windows drum software runs well under wine?

Post by junebug »

I have been pondering using some Windows drum software (addictive drums, ezdrummer, etc) in Linux. My idea would be to run it and sequence it in Reaper, as Reaper runs well under wine. Then i would export my stems and import them into Mixbus and do my recordings there. So in short, i want to see if it's possible to do my drum programming in Reaper using some windows drum software, under wine. Has anyone had any good experiences doing so and which software did they run?

I have done a search of various drum programmes and half the problem is that some of them don't offer demos. I did test out Addictive drums in Reaper before (a year or two ago) and had it working in demo mode. I am now having problems getting the demo to work. My other concern would be how the software is verified and if there would be problems with that, running it in wine. I don't want to purchase something i may encounter issues with. So, has anyone any stories, of varying degrees, with windows drum software and can anyone point me in any direction or give me any ideas? Cheers :)

Addictive Drums works really well with wine. You can also use it with Ardour 3 (or any other linux sequenser) with Festige.

I'd love to be able to use Addictive drums but i'm having a problem with the installer. If i recall correctly, when i had the demo running before, it installed directly from the .exe file. Now i have to install an installer and install it through that. Have you had any problems with that and if so how did you come around them? When i run the installer i get following error -

"The program XLN Online Installer.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

I am running Ubuntu 12.04 with KXstudio repositories and have wine 1.4 installed. I have a 64 bit install. I tried both 32 bit and 64 bit .exe files. Does wine only run in 32 bit out of curiosity? It didn't matter which installer i tried though. Any thoughts on how to get it working?

I use Superior Drummer 2 running under fsthost. It works smoothly and is fully functional – including activation codes, settings, mixer, effects, custom drum pieces, MIDI maps, etc. In my setup it has never generated additional x-runs as compared to whatever Linux-only rig I could have used instead. I used Superior Drummer (1) in the past, but I believe version 2 behaves better. Well, Windows VST support has evolved since, too.

Edit: I’ve used it sequencing in Ardour 3 and Rosegarden.

Hi, I try to install Addictive Drums with the online installer on Ubuntu 12.04 an AV Linux6.
On AV Linux Addictive Drum works with the online installer and festige.
On Ubuntu the online installer works to. But if I try to start Addictive Drum with festige I get:

chris@gemini:~$ festige
/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/gtk-2.0/gtk/__init__.py:127: RuntimeWarning: PyOS_InputHook is not available for interactive use of PyGTK
set_interactive(1)
FeSTige project folder set to /home/chris/.ladish/festige/
WINE realtime scheduling hack enabled, realtime base priority has been set to 15
wineserver running SCHED_NORMAL
fixme:heap:HeapSetInformation 0x2c4000 0 0x23fce0 4
fixme:win:RegisterDeviceNotificationW (hwnd=0xf3190, filter=0x5de2a0,flags=0x00000005) returns a fake device notification handle!
yo... lets see...
"/home/chris/wine/drive_c/Program Files/Steinberg/VstPlugins/"
can't load plugin Addictive Drums.dll
fixme:win:UnregisterDeviceNotification (handle=0xcafeaffe), STUB!

any ideas?

thanks

Try copying the dll file to a default VST_PATH location while removing the spaces. For example, this might work:

sudo cp /home/chris/wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Steinberg/VstPlugins/Addictive\ Drums.dll /usr/local/lib/vst/AddictiveDrums.dll

Sorry, I am not familiar with windows VST in Linux anymore. I used to run AD and I had to rename the dll to get it to work with vsthost from dssi-vst. Hence my suggestion.

Hi,

I highly recommend Addictive Drums as well, BTW you don't HAVE to use the online installer, however you do have to have an internet connection to authorize it after it has been installed.

See here: http://www.xlnaudio.com/support-knowled ... tive_drums

I used this method just last week to install and authorize the full version of Addictive Drums + the Retro ADPack and it is all working great here on AV Linux 6.0.

On AV Linux Addictive Drum is working, also the installer.
I have the problem with ubuntu.
It seems to be a problem between 32bit and 64bit. My ubuntu is 64bit.
And wine is 64bit too. Maybe that's the problem.
Now I copy AddictiveDrums.dll from my xp windows system in to my linux vst folder.
And in works now. :D

Thank for help

Do you have try to synchronise the builtin midiplay with ardour for example? I had no success with Mixbus and jack.
I try to send mtc and mmc commands from my master keyboard (cmf) but it function neither.

Mixbus does not support Midi, since it will not add Ardour 3.0 features until it's 3.0 release, which might be a while.... :( 8)

Is there anything in particular that you're missing in Linux drum software? Or can't Reaper-under-wine talk to linux drum software?
