Xubuntu is a good choice for music production?

What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

Xubuntu is a good choice for music production?

Post by SmileyIcon »

For all i know, Xubuntu is Ubuntu without Unity but with Xfce, so everything should be the same. But I want to be sure because, due to bad luck and curses from my ex, I had my pc formated 5 times the last week..

So, Xubuntu can do all the tricks I need without unknown flaws and such?

Thank you in advance :)

PS: Sorry for my english and sorry if I didn't do/said something or oversaid something, but im new here :)

Hey SmileyIcon, welcome to the forums :D

XFCE has it's own minor differences in it's way of doing things, like every DE does :) To be honest, we'd need to know what you want, what 'flaws' you're looking out for - if it's a good interface, I suppose that's subjective, but yeah, XFCE is pretty decent IMHO. I use Ubuntu Studio 12.04.1 (which uses XFCE) with KXStudio, and I love it.

Incidentally...formats? O_o Is there something preventing you from making separate partitions for data, your current OS, and the new OS you're trying? 25 GB per OS has tended to be enough for me so far...trying new OSes is pretty painless that way. Moreover, why not try it on a LiveDVD/LiveUSB Flash Drive before installing?

Hello

It was just bad luck :P I had some problems with my Ubuntu 12.04 because of some packages and if it wasn't Ubuntu it would be my Windows doing my life a misery. It was a stupid story. Anyways I usually don't have problem with instalations or Ubuntu and other OS. My only problem is to have my home studio running! So, Ubuntu could do everything I needed, Xubuntu would do everything too? I don't expect flaws but I should expect them?

seperate OS partition is mandatory
mine is 8GB and that's enough for me. 20GB should be safe for any distro/DE

man, Gnome is with KDE the haeviest you can get.
So, all other DEs work better than it.

anyways, you can always switch your DE on a installation.
If you like Xubuntu, just install it

Hi,

If you like XFCE and want to make music with your computer, I strongly recommend you go for ubuntustudio 12.04 (also XFCE based) instead of plain Xubuntu as the latter lacks some important features needed for audio production. Later you can install KXstudio on top of it if you wish.
