Hi and welcome alwaysanewb!
I'm a believer of "honesty is the best policy" and as it stands the native Linux DAWs have a bit of catching up to reach REAPERs feature set but REAPER runs well under wine as you probably know and hopefully what is on offer won't be missing too many of your must-have features if you are trying to achieve an all Linux-native studio. I'm confident that this time next year I'll have stopped nagging those poor, overworked and vastly underpaid devs we rely on so much - fingers crossed!
Hope you enjoy these forums and you learn lots from 'em!

Re: Newb from st louis mo.
Thanks, I just got kxstudios up and running last night. It doesn't use qjack and that was my only real difficulty with music in linux. Kxstudios seems to use other tools that suits my needs. As far as catching up to reaper. I mostly just use the computer for tracking. I'd still be using reaper but you need a super computer to get it to run flawlessly so for me linux doesn't need to catch up anymore it really seems like it might suit all my needs and with my 2 gb ram dual core cpu I can even experiment a little bit with soft synths and stuff. Thanks to all the dex for there hard work.
If lwe could finally get the people that make all the sound cards to release linux drivers linux could take over the world

Re: Newb from st louis mo.
Here we go again - yet more JACK fear!
Sorry, but JACK is 110% unavoidable in Linux audio. OK, so thats a bit of an exaggeration but you are going to severely limit your options if you were to try avoiding JACK. You could use Audacity, LMMS, a few cli aps and maybe a couple of trackers such as sunvox but precious little else without JACK.
Maybe we need a sticky at the top of every sub-forum, something like:
"JACK is an unavoidable part of Linux Audio. Ye shall accept this fact of life or leave peacefully now!"

Seriously though, in your defence JACK isn't all that newb friendly and I do understand your frustration but what I said is true.
I'd say the best no-nonsense guide I've read to JACKs use is GMaq's manual for AV Linux which you can download off his site and read even if you're not using his distro as it all still applies.

Re: Newb from st louis mo.
I have everything up and running 100 percent now. It's not so much a problem with jack as it is with the way it was implemented with the qjackctk gui and the ubuntu repository versions of the qjackctl was always bugged to where it was broken and it should of been removed. Like I said earlier I'm using kxstudios and those repos and with cadence, claudia and carla it' makes it easier to use then any windows daw I used. It's not that I didnt like audio on linux. right now linux is the only os I use. I would never use a mac and won't ever use windows again if I can avoid it. It's just with tape and digital tape offically dead as recording mediums, audio support on linux needed to be taken a little more seriously. As far as I'm concerend falkTX fixed every problem music recording had in linux.

Ever noticed something?
Unix comes with compilers.

Re: Newb from st louis mo.
Maybe we should be happy that neither Rui nor F also invented JACK as then PT would become the unquestioned superpower and ruler supreme nation of all Linux audio making Lisbon the Linux audio equivalent of the Vatican?
