gui freeze

Post by flashfyre »

Hi,

muse3: Linux Music Editor; Version 3.0.2

(compiled from sourceforge tarball)

I can import a midi file, play it with fluidsynth, and save the results as a .med, but when I start the application and attempt to reload the file, the gui paints but is not responsive.

Thanks,
John

What distribution are you on?

Seems muse is somehow blocked, judging by the backtrace the audio thread is a prime suspect. Are you running with jack as backend or any other way?
Please start muse with the -D parameter and post the startup log.
As a test you could try starting with -a parameter to completely disable audio, I'm betting it works then, though there would be no sound.

Hi,

I am using Linux Mint 18.2 Sonya x86_64. I new to sequencers and linux audio.

After a reboot, jack is not running in the bg, and I’m not starting it elsewhere.

After starting muse3 I see this in the process table :

john 2384 1 1 17:45 ? 00:00:00 /usr/bin/jackd -T -ndefault -dalsa -dhw:0 -r44100 -p1024 -n2 -Xseq

When I go to the MusE Settings, Midi Ports / Soft Synth, I see jack-midi-0 in Usable Devices.

If I remove jack from the Usable Devices, and attempt to load the file, the gui hangs – it’s painted, but not responsive.

If I remove jack and add fluidsynth, and attempt to load the file, the gui pops up with a “Jack Shutdown!” dialog. If I choose “cancel” it does not hang and the gui is mostly responsive, but does not rewind or scroll. If I choose the “restart” option the gui hangs.

muse3 -a does load the file and operate normally, scrolls, etc. without audio.

Thanks! It's late here but scanning the output in some detail:
readConfigMidiPort: device not found FluidSynth-0
readConfigMidiPort: device not found
Looks funny. Not sure if that means not found yet and it will be soon. Will check tomorrow.

By coincidence I have been using Jack-1 for a few weeks for testing. So you're in good company.
(Curious. Are you using Jack-1 by choice, or Mint installs it?)
I have been loading my songs which have all kinds of fluidsynth and other synths, no trouble.

In the meantime I hate to ask but is it possible for you to post the .med file somehow,
so we can be sure of we're seeing?

Jack as you mention seems to be autostarted by MusE.

Did you compile muse with rtaudio support? In that case it would be good idea to start muse with -t to force it to use the rtaudio backend instead of jack. It is supposed to kick in if jack is not started, but maybe the autostart setting of jack can interfere.
Can't remember of the top of my head how the autostart works but I would try disabling it.

For long term use it is recommended to use jack though, especially if you are going to record audio.
To get further using jack I would propose starting it before MusE, the line you printed should work:
jackd -T -ndefault -dalsa -dhw:0 -r44100 -p1024 -n2 -Xseq

Start jack in a separate terminal and wait a few seconds to see that it is stable. Try with some other client, for instance audacious music player has a jack backend (be sure to select it in the configuration though), to make sure audio out really works.
If this fails we probably found the root cause and this is what we need to investigate.

If it works we should be fairly certain the audio driver is ok, now start muse and check if it still behaves the same, in which case we need to dig deeper.

internal poll failure reading response from client MusE to a xrun event
jack main caught signal 12
JACK ERROR: cannot continue execution of the processing graph (Broken pipe)
JACK ERROR: graph error - calling shutdown handler
Audio::shutdown()
^^^This part looks interesting.

Hi Tim. I kind of fumbled through the compilation dependencies using apt-get and am new to sequencers and linux audio, so it wasn't by choice. Mint 18.2 is similar to ubuntu 16.04 or Debian sid.

Here is a link to the libjack-dev that I installed :
https://packages.debian.org/sid/libjack-dev

Sure, I found the original on the web and am using it to learn. It's too big for the forum or pastebin though at 594.6 kB (594,597 bytes).

I hope dropbox is okay.

Hi,

I used compile.sh "as is" and installed (approximately) the following packages from debian sid :

apt-get install qtdeclarative5-dev qtcreator qttools5-dev-tools libqt5svg5-dev ladspa-sdk libsndfile1-dev libjack-dev librtaudio-dev ladish libalsaplayer-dev dssi-dev liblo-dev libfluidsynth-dev libinstpatch-dev

I say "approximately" because I got a little obsessed with meeting dependencies with sid libraries where possible. I cobbled the above list from looking at the commands I issued.

Here are a few compilation messages I put in my notes :

** WARNING: rtaudio (>= 4.0) was enabled, but development files were not found.
** WARNING: lash (>= 0.2) was enabled, but development files were not found.
** HINT: Don't have LASH? Try installing the LADISH LASH compatibility package instead.
** WARNING: LV2 GTK2 support is enabled, but Gtk2 (gtkmm-2, gtk+-2) development files were not found. LV2 Gtk2 UI support is disabled.
** WARNING: System LV2 support libraries were chosen, but development files were not found or too old:
Requires lv2 >= 1.12.0, lilv-0 >= 0.22.0, sord-0 >= 0.14.0
Building supplied internal versions instead.

The following components will be built:
-----------------------------------------------
ALSA support
OSC (Liblo) support
DSSI support
LV2 support
Native VST support
Fluidsynth support
Instpatch support

The following components WILL NOT be built:
-----------------------------------------------
RTAudio support
Lash support
Python support
LV2 Gtk2 UI support
Experimental features

Internal modules will be built as shared components.

I don't see a means in the muse3 global settings or man page to disable jack autostart. If someone could drop a note...

Starting jack in a separate terminal, starting muse3, and loading the test file results in the same freeze. The jackd in the separate terminal crashes :

jack main caught signal 12

Attempting to use audacity with the jackd device / host set in preferences results in the same crash.

I'm considering removing some packages and recompiling, but for now I'll wait to hear back.

Thanks again for the assistance!

Yup, just as I thought.
They are benign errors and they can be ignored - but only in the case of synth devices or empty midi ports, not real hw devices (alsa, jack etc.)
We should suppress them in the code, since they can be repeated up to 200 times for empty midi ports or midi ports with a synth device.
I don't see a means in the muse3 global settings or man page to disable jack autostart. If someone could drop a note...
Yes, that is the muse3 -J command-line option.
Type muse3 -h to see all command-line options.
Attempting to use audacity with the jackd device / host set in preferences results in the same crash.
Can you clarify: Does that mean audacity's preferences or MusE's preferences?
ie. Do you mean you were attempting to connect to audacity through MusE's midi/synth configuration dialog?
Or do you mean that other apps such as audacity, by themselves, are also failing to start or use Jack on their own?
Thanks.
Not sure if it has been said yet, but if it is the case that other apps won't start as well, that's a different ballgame.

This is quite odd, seems you installed librtaudio-dev still the build system did not pick it up. I'm on an ubuntu based distro and this hasn't been a problem.
Just to be sure I would recommend deleting the build dir and building again, in case the check is cached.

In the list of dependencies were some more warnings that is good to fix, lv2 gui support in particular.
In the README there is a chapter 'Building MusE under Ubuntu' with a fairly complete package list.

Judging by the above rtaudio isn't in the binary so it will crash, an omission on our part is that -t should not be possible to do in this situation, I'll check it out.

I saw that muse3 -a does indeed work, which to me suggests it is a jack related issue.

Yes, that is the muse3 -J command-line option.
Type muse3 -h to see all command-line options.
Ah, that's it. I wonder if we shouldn't reverse this setting to default to off. autostarting jack is a bit of a black art to me, don't think I've ever had work in a satisfactory way.

flashfyre wrote: Attempting to use audacity with the jackd device / host set in preferences results in the same crash.
Tim E. Real wrote: Can you clarify: Does that mean audacity's preferences or MusE's preferences?
I'm reading the above as that MusE is not involved, which in turn means that the jack settings might not be correct for your sound card.
Jack is a high performance low level sound server, it exposes some rather specific sound card paramters to be able to squeeze the most out of your hardware. Sometimes this means there are device specific settings that need to be set correctly.
Though usually jack complains loudly and exits if the settings are not possible to set, but there may be other situations.

Some things to check:
1. the jack start line points out alsa device hw:0, usually correct, but maybe this isn't the correct sound card?
Can for instance be listed with 'cat /proc/asound/cards'
2. check the -r -p -n settings, some cards require 3 buffers and some only work right with 48 khz
3. just recalled there was another post here somewhere about pulse audio blocking jack. Recent ubuntu variants should not suffer from this but maybe the jack instance isn't actually working correctly?

Thanks! Everything is working now.

Dexed would beep after the rebuild, but fluidsynth was silent. Rebuilding the .med file with a midi import and setup fixed it.

Here are some notes :

To recap, jackd was crashing with signal 12. Audacity was run independently from muse3, and the same thing happened.

Going beyond "compile.sh" :

1. Open terminal and type (either on one line or with several 'sudo apt-get install <packages'):
sudo apt-get install build-essential cmake libsndfile1-dev libsamplerate0-dev\
libjack-jackd2-dev ladspa-sdk qt5-default qttools5-dev qttools5-dev-tools\
liblo-dev dssi-dev lv2-dev libsamplerate0-dev libsndfile1-dev git\
libfluidsynth-dev libgtkmm-2.4-dev librtaudio-dev libqt5svg5-dev\
libinstpatch-dev

This added jackd2 (I did not install git). I also removed librtaudio-dev librtaudio4v5 jackd and deleted the source directory.

Extract the source and recompile :

$ ./compile_muse.sh
